Do you guys know about Choline?

We’ve talked about quite a few nutrients except this one. So what even is it? First of all, it’s an essential nutrient that isn’t sufficiently produced by the human body, so we have to seek it out in our diets.

So what does it even do?

Choline supports numerous vital bodily functions, including:

Cell maintenance: The body uses choline to produce fats that make up cellular membranes.

DNA synthesis: Choline, along with other nutrients such as folate and vitamin B-12, can affect gene expression.

Metabolism: Choline helps metabolize fats.

Functional foods are the reason I think I am losing weight so easily these days. My friend who is doing my hair tomorrow came by to pick up the hair and prep it and she said I definitely look like I've lost weight. Others have said this to me recently, too, so I know it's not just in my head. The scale is not lying to me, either.

People really do not understand: fats are NOT YOUR ENEMY! I used to run 40 minutes on the treadmill 2-4x a week and was skinny, but STILL could not get rid of fat in certain areas of my body where it likes to accumulate. Now I eat more fat (polyunsaturated), and I have lost about 8 pounds since September.

The point is "nothing in excess," as the Greeks have said.

I eat walnuts every single day (at least 6 days a week). A bare minimum of one ounce, sometimes two ounces (only 182 calories per ounce, a great addition to breakfast). I started eating cashews more, too.

I also think my weight loss can be owed to getting more choline, since I started eating free-range eggs once a week (choline is involved in fat metabolism).

A phospholipid pathway from plants to parasites

Recent findings by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis may aid in the development of therapies to treat parasitic infections, including malaria, and may help plant scientists one day produce hardier crops. The research team's work is published in the Dec. 29 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Choline is an essential nutrient that humans get from certain foods, including eggs, meat, leafy greens and nuts. The human body converts choline into phosphocholine (pCho), which it in turn converts into (among other essential building blocks) phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho), a component of cell membranes. Plants, however, can't acquire the nutrient from the environment and so must synthesize pCho from scratch. The biochemical pathway plants use to synthesize pCho is also found in nematodes and the malaria parasite Plasmodium.

In plants, the enzymatic reaction that produces pCho is essential for both normal function and for responding to stresses. Plant pCho is converted into PtdCho, which builds membranes that can adjust their rigidity in response to temperature changes. Plant pCho also gets converted into molecules that help the plant survive high salt. The enzymes that produce plant pCho are called called phosphoethanolamine methyltransferases (PMTs).

Soon Goo Lee, a postdoctoral research fellow at Washington University in the laboratory of Joseph Jez (who is also an associate editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry), has been fascinated by PMTs in both plants and parasites for many years.
