Hey y’all wanna see the worlds most appropriately unhinged phantom of the opera as it came up on my FYP?
Watch carefully, it's subtle.
THIS HAD ME CACKLING 🤣🤣🤣
So, we all know the "I Want" song type – but what about the "I Wanted" song? A song where a character bitterly reflects on their former dreams, and they chastise themself for having been naive enough to believe they'd come true?
For instance:
I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables
Legally Blonde from Legally Blonde
Breathe from In the Heights
No Good Deed from Wicked
Pretty Funny from Dogfight
There's a Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q
Flowers from Hadestown
What do y'all think?
EDIT: Just noticed that these are all sung by female characters. Anyone got any examples for a male character?
We all know "I Want" song type – but what about the "I Wanted" song? (MALE EDITION)
If Dreams Came True from A Tale of Two Cities
Runs in the Family from The Outsiders
As Good As You from Jane Eyre
Words Fail from Dear Evan Hansen
If It's True from Hadestown (nytw version)
Where's the Girl from The Scarlet Pimpernel
Heartbreaker from Bright Star
Farewell, Good Angel from Jane Eyre
When I look at You (reprise) from The Scarlet Pimpernel
Monster from Epic (does that one count?)
These were all I could think of at the moment! If I think of more later I'll add them.
I don't need gold, don't need silver. Just bread when I'm hungry, fire when I'm cold. Don't need a ring for my finger. Just need a steady hand to hold. Don't promise me fair sky above. Don't promise me kind road below. Just walk with me, my love. Any way the wind blows.

"I know the way. I promise. "
Even More NYTW Hadestown moments that I miss PT3
Pt1, Pt2
I love the theme of Orpheus never being 'finished' with his musical masterpiece. It's always "It's not finished" and "I'm working on my song," or "aren't you working on your masterpiece?" That's so true of an artist, they never really feel done.
I like that even after he plays for Hades and Hades compliments him, he says "it's not finished." I greatly prefer this to bdwy!hadestown when Orpheus does in fact finish his song. It feels more real to think of him working on it until he dies, tweaking and improving, adding and changing, never being satisfied.
“Gather round you vagabonds; picking fruit and hopping freight...”
Epic I was a masterpiece, I can’t. 🥹
[Orpheus] “I’ll sing a song of a love gone wrong” [HERMES] “A love gone wrong alright. EVERY YEAR THEY HAD THIS FIGHT.”
“OooOOorpheus all the prEetty songs you sing aint gonna SHEeeltrr us from the Wind, the Wind, the Wind.”
[Orpheus] “to the patroness of all of this, Persephone!” [Hermes] “Here, here!!!”
[Orpheus] Well, come on..... *warm laughter* 🍷 "let the world we dream of be the one we live in now."🍷
That entire original toast. It’s better.
“WEEerEn’T we BIRDS of a Feather.” 😭
“With a suitcase full of SUMMERtime, PerSEphone, by name!”
“I recall there was a time, we were happy you and I; in the garden where we met, nothing was between us yet.” 🥹🥹🥹
Persephone focuses first on herself and hades. Her grief stems from the loss of him, of their relationship. She appeals to their personal bond instead of attacking how his actions are destroying the overworld which I think is a lot more endearing. It shines a more vulnerable light on their relationship, and on Persephone’s emotions. She really just wants the man she loves back.
I also like that in the NYTW it Hades isn’t the reason™️ times are hard above ground?? Like, times are hard and people are poor but it never explicitly says that’s Hades’ fault. He takes advantage of the situation by exploiting people’s needs and wants, and in so doing he gets them to work for him. But it just feels like he is a successful lord of the underworld that takes advantage of the poor, not like he CREATED the poor?? And he isn’t the reason summer is GONE??? and he isn’t destroying the planet?????
Like, Hadestown is problematic for sure and in Epic III Orpheus paints a picture of how Hades is cold and hard and hurts everything and everyone he touches, but it isn’t played as if he’s literally the cause of global warming..... where as in BDWY they’re like “THE OCEANS ARE OVERFLOWING BECAUSE OF YOU” 😤
“Can’t you see she made a DEAL? Gave her Wooord, took a VOW?”
but why did they take persephone’s lines out of chant ii 🙁
Persephone: Love was when he came to me, begging on his bended knees to please have pity on his heart; I let him lay me in the dirt. I felt his arms around me then. We didn’t need a wedding bed, dark seeds scattered on the ground, the wild birds were flying around....
The fates are the main villains in NYTW, manipulating gods and humans alike.
You can hear Eurydice come in the the “la la la” of Epic III with all the other workers. I know that’s just because it was a small cast but I love hearing Eurydice singing with Orpheus and believing in his music like that ❤️
Persephone: “How long have we been married?” Hades: “Since the world began”
Nabiya crying in Come home with me II 😭💔
ALL OF COME HOME WITH ME II HELLO WHERE IS MY DIALOGUE IN THAT SCENE?
[Eurydice] why are you getting on our knees? [Orpheus] I’m asking you to marry me. Marry me. say ‘I do.’ I came all this way to ask you to.
THE ENTIRE BEGINNING OF PROMISES, WHAT THE HECK, WHY CUT THAT SHORT???💔😩
I love that Eurydice admits she’s done wrong too! and orpheus has a chance to confront her about her betrayal of his love and faith, and let her know she really hurt him... they both take accountability and agree to do better, which makes the ending EVEN SADDER.
"You're early"😟 "I missed you." 😭😭😭
More moments I miss from NYTW Hadestown
I listened to this again a couple days ago, and boy do I have thoughts! lol
“Orpheus was a poor boy, till he opened his mouth to sing.”
“He’s talking about your man!” [Do you think I give a da---?”]
Hermes and Orpheus venting about Hades.
Hermes and Orpheus bonding in “Way Down Hadestown”
[Orpheus] Mr Hades is a mean old BOSS! [HERMES] WITH A SILVER WHISTLE AND A GOLDEN SCALE!
Orpheus having ANy lines. Wasn’t it nice when Orpheus had lines???
Nabiya’s lower notes when she sings “I don’t want to go back to the lonely life.” her shuddering breath right before “Say that you’ll hold me forever. Say that the wind won’t change on us. Say that we’ll stay with each other, and it will always be like this.”
The fact that Orpheus’ ONE line in “All I’ve ever know” is directed at Eurydice, full of confidence and hope. Also, his notes being the only “high” notes in the song. It really emphasizes how he is the light in her dark world.
Hermes’ whistle actually SOUNDS like a train whistle. I didn’t realize how much I appreciate that.
The gentle way Chris Sullivan says “When she fell she fell in spite of herself, in love with Orpheus.”
[Eurydice] Why should I become your wife? [Orpheus] Because I make you feel alive.
👏 Orpheus talks directly to Eurydice in ”Come Home With Me” 👏
I love that Hermes doesn’t interrupt or speak for Orpheus in this version. Orpheus is allowed to approach Eurydice in his own way. And he’s confident enough to do it without help. He seems much more secure then Reeve!Orpheus. (BTW I’m not trying to hate on Reeve, I know he worked hard, I just think Damn!Orpheus and Reeve!Orpheus are very different. And I prefer Damon.)
“The lovers took each other by the hand, and danced underneath the sky!” (very similar to “the lovers to each other by the hand and brother you know what they did? they danced.” I’m a sucker for a good paralell.)
“Living it up on Top” feels more like spring and less like the last breath of august.
“Who says times are hard” VS “Let’s not talk about hard times”
Persephone is a little more .... vulnerable? She also seems to be truly joyful. In BDWY its more like she’s forcing the cheer, but in NYTW it’s authentic. But MAYBE THAT’S JUST ME THINKING TOO MUCH.
In “Living it up on Top,” 👏 Orpheus. 👏 Has. 👏 Lines.
“Give me the sky that you can’t buy or sell at any price!” (I did this one before but I LOVE all the Orpheus’ lines in Living it Up and I’m upset they were taken from him on BDWY)
Orpheus sings his first song (Epic I) and Persephone APPEARS on stage. He sings about her and she enters as he’s finishing his song. It’s so pretty!!!
[Eurydice] “That’s good” [Orpheus] “It isn’t finished” 💞CUE BIG DANG KISS💞
The simple instrumental. The intimacy you feel with the small ensemble.
The small band vibe.
The “campfire story” vibe
“On ThE kEEEeeYS”
The riff between “...Where do you think they come from, they come from way down Hadestown, way down under the ground” and “Mr. Hades is a mean old boss!!!”
It’s a sad song, it’s a sad tale it’s a tradegy! It’s a sad song but we sing it anyway. *fun dance music kicks on*
It’s a love son. It’s a tale of a love that never dies...It’s a love song; about someone... who tries
Orpheus and Eurydice get introduced in “The Road to Hell” at the SAME TIME, with Orpheus on his knees, his heart in Eurydice’s hands. IT’S SO SYMBOLIC AND SAD AND FORESHADOWS WHAT IS TO COME, AND I LOVE IT.
>> continued in PT3.....
Every little penny in the wishing well. Every little nickel on the drum. On the drum! All them shiny little heads and tails Where do you think they come from?
nytw hadestown appreciation → Way Down Hadestown
nytw hadestown, my fave 🪕🎶💕
my favorite moments from old versions of the outsiders: two bit knowing what happened before darry (or whatever the hell is happening here..)
(part 1/?)
did Dally tell Two-Bit what happened? Did Two-Bit find a body and freak out? Did Darrel call ahead asking Two-Bit if Johnny and Pony are at his house, and then he hears there was a fight in the park and spends all night looking for his brothers??
i know it's still really early so I don't expect and answer any time soon, but does anyone have a video slime of Brody Grant's last performance as Ponyboy that they'd be willing to share? Please, I would be so grateful. 🥹💙
Again, I understand that right now it's really new and probably not available for gifting for a while, but I just thought I would ask early. Hopefully I get a response. 😊 Thank you everyone!!!!
The different DAMD endings…
featuring two standing hugs :(
I hate to make you go, but there ain't no other way, even though it kills me to say.
Joshua Boone performs Run Run Brother - The Outsiders
DALLY THAT IS BAD ADVICE, OK. I KNOW YOU JUST WANT TO HELP BUT - NO.
This song is such a banger though. It is so dang good! The first time I saw it I was shooketh 🫨
side note...every time I hear this song, I really wish they'd gone to Darrel. Things would have turned out very differently. He just would have been a lot more... level-headed, and responsible and made better decisions. He would have been furious and scared and and stressed out of his mind and probably yelled a lot, but he would have taken care of it, he would have made sure his brothers did the right thing, and he would have put his neck on the line for them.
I’m never forgiving the soundtrack people for not including the “I need you Darrel. I can’t lose my big brother too” in throwing in the towel. We have lifelong beef now.
OH MY GOSH SAAAAAAAAAAME.
ALSO: DARREL NEVER HIT ME BEFORE 🥺😭
OKAY but in the Outsiders Musical it is SO SAD that almost ever time Sodapop Curtis tries to comfort/protect someone he is shrugged off, pushed away, or straight up attacked. Like, this boy just wants to HELP!!!! LET HIM TAKE CARE OF YOU AND STOP REJECTING HIM😭😫
Take her - forget me - forget all of this!
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL (2011)
This hug is so beautiful 🥰
Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
Oh my gosh, I love them ❤️
"Now citizens, vote!"
"....Guilty!"
Inspired by my previous post, because I made myself sad thinking about this scene. 💔I cannot believe this isn't included in the PBS concert proshot. SMH.

When Charles Darnay is being dragged from the mob court and Lucie is reaching for him they're ripped apart from each other, calling each other's names, not even to allowed to say goodbye, and Carton has to help drag Lucie out of there because otherwise she'll probably get killed...
that's some heartbreaking stuff
