I’ve been participating in the @sktchy “30 Faces / 30 Days - Pen and Pencil” challenge, so I thought I would share a few portraits from the first 15 days. What I like most about this challenge is that there are ten different instructors, so you get to experiment with different mediums and stylistic approaches to portraiture. This is the eighth piece in my series, “Catharsis,” which is a body of work and writing about my medical experiences, my journey through illness and disability.  “Chronic Migraine” is a piece addressing my struggles with migraines that I have had since my teens. These migraines are treatment resistant, and have forced me to try an array of medications across several health providers that caused serious side effects. It felt almost surreal, but this was my first drawing of a meal out in almost a year. For those who know me well, I am an avid sketchbook artist, and love drawing the meals I have out, but due to COVID-19 restrictions and how sick I’ve been, I haven’t been able to enjoy a good sketchbook meal in quite some time. I chose my reunion spot carefully - I went to @eatwithbacari (the Glendale location at @americanabrand). It’s a Mediterranean and Italian small plate restaurant with distanced outdoor seating (wide enough for my rollator and service dog). I used to visit there with my partner and mother when she visited pre-pandemic. Every meal we had was a knock-out. Today was no different, service was warm and kind, and the food was incredible. I set up my tools, and relished in just… enjoying. A good simple drawing session, beautiful, well-crafted food, a simple experience I had so taken for granted.
