Controversial opinion, I do not actually think the contingencies or the paranoia that is really common with the bats is actually all that problematic.

We essentially get page after page of proof that Batman needs to be paranoid because anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

I also feel like it's not a breach of trust that so many people interpret it when plans are made to take people down.

Especially when Batman has plans for himself, Tim has plans for himself.

Making these plans at no point do they assume they are above them. The thought process isn't I'm amazing so I'm gonna point out all your flaws or whatever.

The actual reasoning is to make sure that humans can survive if these all powerful beings get mind controlled or decide to go evil.

I also think and maybe this is just more of a personal thing. I definitely see some arrogance in the heroes on either side of the equation.

Either they're assuming nothing will ever go wrong so the plans are unneeded.

Or they make plans that could have such disastrous consequences.

I think with Batman in particular, his contingency plans for himself are honestly more problematic than anything else but that's because he really put his whole ass dick in while making them.

What if Bruce actually has multiple contingency plans for his kids because he thinks they're very talented and threats. Having a contingency plan for someone is could kinda be like his way of showing his respect for you. Nightwing knows when he finds out Batman made a contingency plan for him is his dad's way of saying "I'm proud"

Most of his plans for most people just boil down to either hurt their feelings or make them lose their mind.

Danny goes rampage (for whatever reason) and Batman is like "don't worry contingency plan"

Except he used the stuff that works for other ghosts. Not knowing that Danny is a halfa.

Not only that but when he gets the blood blossoms (Danny mentioned it very off Handently) they don't work either because these blossoms are not the same ones from dannys universe.

Danny eventually figures it out himself and is so disappointed in Batman. Not for making the plans but not telling him about them.

He's like "I told you I adapt very easily, that means normal ghost stuff doesn't work on me and no plan will work twice" and "if they take my humanity, a lot of attacks won't work either because I won't care about damage to me"

He IS very offended about the blood blossoms because he knows he mentions that it would destroy him if exposed for too long

Afterwards Batman keeps coming with plans and gets shot down a lot. Which, is quite embarrassing.

When Danny mentions that his parents made better plans to kill him, no one is sure how to take that.

Contingency Plans

I truly believe the worst insult within in the Batfam is being told "I don't have a contingency plan for you." Because there are only two possible interpretations of that statement, right? Your family member is saying that you're either not a big enough threat to plan around (they'll figure it out on the fly) or not important enough to them to be saved from causing damage you'll regret in case of mind control or snapping after one indignity too many or whatever. It's tacitly understood that something like that WILL happen. Every single Bat agrees that it's not paranoia if the universe really is out to get you, and boy is it ever out to get them and their loved ones.

So imagine the way they react when loved ones OUTSIDE of their fucked up little circle say that. It would basically go:

Bat: Hey, you've been updating your contingency plan for me right? Friend: N-no. No, I haven't?! I don't have a contingency plan for you. Bat: Oh. Why not? Friend: What? Because I love you and I trust you! Bat: Okay, so now you wanna back peddle. Nice try. Friend: ...genuinely what the fuck is happening. Bat: Hmmph! *storms off in anger*

Whereas from the Bat's perspective, that conversation went:

Bat: Hey, you care about and respect me enough to stay apprised of my doings and keep both of us safe in the inevitable event something goes wrong, right? Friend: No, I do not?! In fact, I'm shocked you would ask. Bat: What?! Why?! Friend: Um, I changed my mind. Let me re-answer your previous question with a blatant lie meant to soothe your feelings! Bat: Wow, okay, so that's how it is. I don't appreciate being lied to. Friend: ...You know, I think I'll just play dumb about this whole thing. Bat: Hmmph! *storms off in appropriate anger* Like. Do y'all ever think about this?

Y’know what my least favorite part about the “Contingency Plans” stories from DC are?

Very one is completely unrealistic. This is gonna be a bit of a rant, but here are some of the main things that just seem out of character, yet happen almost every time:

• The Justice League distrusting Batman afterwards

It’s just seems unrealistic that the JL wouldn’t at least see the merit in Batman’s ideas, if not understand his motives entirely. Especially since they always work.

• The Justice League expecting Batman to beg for forgiveness

Come on, it’s Batman. They have to know he won’t even defend himself, he’ll just walk out like he does EVERY TIME.

• Batman feeling even a bit remorseful

I’m not gonna explain this one again, it’s Batman.

Edges are dangerous. People or things either get cut by them or fall off them. They have ways of causing harm. The same remains with the Edge Territories. Here there be hives of scum and villainy. Here there be pirates.

Here, also, there be Humans.

Everyone venturing into the Edge knows that it's best to have a Human on board. More than one for preference. What's less frequent is the Humans who decide to not be friendly. Humans could also decide on a life of piracy.
