Fic Rec: Fire Meet Gasoline

I don't often rec fics, but after a ridiculous couple of weeks, an Erised fic caught my eye and I snuggled in after a particularly long and stupid day and began to read Fire Meet Gasoline.

I love a good "fake dating" trope and this fic absolutely hit ALL the things I love about these two. The authors characterizations are absolutely spot-on and just when you think things are getting intense…an adorable chinchilla (Snaffles Willoughby McBiscuit Munch Potter) scampers in and steals the show. Add Scorpius along with the chinchilla and my heart melted.

But it wasn't just a cute kid and an adorable pet that made me stay up far too late reading…this author unquestionably captured the essence of two damaged souls who both had their own reasons for not dating. But at the core of it, was them both feeling unworthy of love. (and this author shows that so well – like kick me in the gut well.)

The pacing, the characterizations and the flat-out story telling in this makes 65k practically fly by. Astoria, Ginny, Luna, Hermione and even Ron (along with others) round out a cast that fit together so well. I'm not lying when I say that I laughed and had my heart broken so many times…but in such a good way. And the smut is smoking hot!!

Also, do NOT let the additional content warnings make you 'hit the back button'. I suppose there are those that might be offended or whatever, but any of those mentions are part of who these two are in this story. (if you're really concerned, feel free to ask me)

Do yourself a favour and carve out some time in your schedule to enjoy this absolutely brilliant tale. I'm pretty confident you'll be glad you did.

Okay. Okay. I can keep my chill. (I cannot.) This fic, you guys-- THIS FIC!!! I participated in this year's @hdowlpost fest, a lowkey holiday gift exchange, and when I threw out the prompt of "magical dating game" I genuinely didn't have any clue what extraordinary things my anon gifter would be able to do with it.

Now, to be fair, it's tailored to a lot of my fic likes: humor and banter, pining, Auror partners drarry, fun magical theory, UST. (The list goes on. Lol) But even if it hadn't been, even if it had been something that didn't have any of my fallback drive-me-happy/crazy things in it, god -- the writing itself would have been enough. It was funny and sharp and fantastically characterized, and I want to stitch it on a quilt and wrap myself up in it, istg. (Well. I'd hire someone else to, because I don't have a shred of crafting talent. But still.)

This fic was to die for, and I'm giddy right now, legit giddy that it was written for me. It has got to be admired and loved by everyone else too, so oh please, go read the thing! 😍😍

FIC REC - BLOOD AND FIRE (for H/D Erised)

Title: Blood And Fire Author: @lqtraintracks for @hd-erised Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter Rating: EXPLICIT, AND HOW! <3 Word Count: 45k Summary: Harry has spent the last twelve years in Romania, not returning to England as often as he knows he should. It’s complicated. But when Ginny asks him to be her best man and help her plan her wedding, he can’t say no. Having a reckoning with his choices, with himself, won’t be easy. To say nothing of seeing Draco again.

My Thoughts: I don’t know what the fuck some of the writers for this year’s Erised are drinking, but you can bet that once reveals are out I’m going to load the fuck up on that shit.

This fic… This fic moved me. I feel shaken and all bright inside; I’m totally thrilled, by both the writing and the content, and there are so many things to love, I have no idea how to narrow it down to a few to put into a rec.

In it, Harry returns to England for Ginny and Pansy’s wedding, and has to confront the force of his longing for Draco, with whom he had a brief relationship several years prior. And, honestly, I can’t remember ever having read pining like this. It saturated every word, and was so splendidly done that I’m still spinning. Yet, it was… (I’m having so many problems formulating thoughts for it, sorry!!) also… something that lingered, that gave Harry and Draco — who has been pining too — time to grow together. Which is not to say that it’s remotely slow-burn with either the sex or emotion (it’s not. lol), but it felt… lush, and rich, and beautiful. And speaking of the sex and emotion, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve read sex scenes this hot that also had this level of connectedness  — and it felt like that for every single one. (Psst. There were several.)

I really want to go on and on about this fic, and I could. But you’ll appreciate it so much more if you let it speak to you instead of me. Go read immediately — I need people to share my love for it with. <33333

FIC REC - HEARTLINES (for H/D Erised)

Title: Heartlines Author: @shiftylinguini for @hd-erised Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter Rating: Explicit (Lots. <3) Word Count: 72.5k Content: Bonding, Wandless magic, Forced proximity, First Time/Loss of Virginity, Friends to Lovers, Magical theory, Intercrural sex, Anal sex, Oral Sex, Frottage, Dirty Talk Summary: Harry never expected he’d end up chipping away at his virginity while wandless and bonded to Malfoy in Northern Europe.

He never expected that would turn out to be the least surprising thing to happen while out on their training expedition in the middle of nowhere, either.

My Thoughts: Fucking fuckity fuck fuck. This is brilliant. I sped through this fic like I do with few others and I’m dying — dying — to be able to share it with everyone.  

As the summary says, Draco and Harry are forced together on a wandless training mission to test their adaptability (one assumes). Complicating this is the fact that Harry kissed him the week prior, putting an odd strain on their tentative friendship/partnership, as well as the bond (bonding! *dances*) — connecting their hearts — they suddenly find out they have to undertake before being sent on their mission.

Now, okay, that’s all you get of context from me, because frankly, you should already be reading it, just based on that. But. Right away, everything about this feels real, particularly the characterization — which is wonderful. Everyone feels like you just know they should/would be; Harry’s responses and actions are beautifully done, smart and awkward and brave, like we all know him.  The banter (the banter!! *sobs with joy*) is funny and sharp, and the flirting, once they find themselves alone is just… Have you ever read UST growing and growing and growing (much like Harry or Draco. *leers*), even after they start getting physical together?  Well. Like that. And also, the sex? *chokes on my own drool*

But the fic is also a really fantastic opportunity to for them to explore those issues (albeit, probably more extreme, in drarry’s case) that couples have to confront. So much of their history (individual and combined) and lingering resentment toward each other — though it’s established early on that they really like each other — is brought up because of smaller, often unrelated moments, and it’s so beautifully written, each time.

This fic is wonderful, and I’m so crazy about it; it’s funny and sexy and sly and aching, and there’s this great, almost quiet (mostly. Ahem.) surrounding plot while Harry and Draco are learning each other better.  Go read immediately if you have the time, and slowly, if you only have a few minutes here and there.  You’ll see exactly what I mean. <33
