Am I the only one who thinks Misa and Matsuda are both autistic? I remember both of them having trouble reading the room multiple times. Misa often gives affection without permission and I know it's not just her obsession with Light 'cause I remember her kissing L's face too. She trauma dumped on Light immediately after meeting him and acted like it was completely normal. She killed random people who got in her way up until Light explicitly told her they should only kill criminals. She once called Soichiro old and didn't seem to notice that it was rude

I'd provide more examples but it's been over a year since I've watched the show. I'm autistic myself and I've done a lot of research in the past so sometimes I just get that vibe from watching a character's behavior

this would change the trajectory of the story so much trust me. anyways here's a rundown of wildly unserious US highschool au headcanons for the Main Three...

light yagami

• oh absolutely he's getting bullied for his last name!! someone made an "imagay" joke in 5th grade and it stuck like gorilla glue

• not as popular as he was in japanese secondary school; popular in a different way, moreso in academic circles. outside of them people think he's weird af. he spends time studying and gets good grades? NERD. playing sports doesn't help him either; "bro is on the tennis team 💀", "bro likes hitting balls 💀", "who's a good little racket boy"(🤨)

• he'd probably do theatre honestly. within this crowd i think he'd actually be pretty popular, but there'd also be a large group of people that are pissed about how bossy he is/are jealous that he gets leads or smth. anyways. good at becoming popular within certain, nerdier groups he's dedicated to, but not In General. the school at large thinks he's a weird lil teachers pet & whenever he raises his hand in philosophy class the other students AUDIBLY groan

• tutors people and is (mostly unintentionally) SUPER annoying about it. explains EVERY little detail; holy shit we get it you're smart

• wakes up at like 3am to get ready for school. always wears elaborate business-casual outfits and maintains a hella neat appearance. always. jesus lord who has time for allat

• would probably be president of the student government. covertly holds that above people.

• in political/justice/law clubs. could see him in smth like model UN

• if his school has criminal law, forensics or anything related, he's in those classes fs

• everyone thinks he's gay – they're probably right. i could see him joining the GSA as a "straight ally" (everyone already knows bro. the closet is glass)

misa amane

• i feel like she'd get along with a lot of different groups/cliques and have several different pools of friends/acquaintances lol. pretty popular?? but because she's also alternative, it's not really in a stereotypical queen-bee way

• also wakes up early to get ready; doesn't need anywhere near (haha near) as much time as light because she doesn't obsess over details american-psycho style, and she probably picks her outfits out the night prior and Sticks With Them (light strikes me as an indecisive 'what should i wear 🥺' type. overthinks EVERY outfit)

• i could also see her doing theatre, and i do think she'd get a fair amount of leads (i mean, she starred in a movie in the actual show) but i feel like she'd also be super into costume crew - she'd probably have a leadership position there at some point idk. also offers to do people's makeup and/or hair :3

• cheerleader misa?? cheerleader misa!! her Main Extracurricular perhaps... has done it all 4 years

• gets good grades but takes herself Way less seriously than light so people think she's more chill (they're right); she also doesn't spend All Her Time studying, and in fact tends to neglect it but gets relatively high marks anyway. has probably tutored for service hours at the advice of someone else, but thought it was too boring to continue

• a product of being photogenic and having a lot of different friend groups is her getting into the yearbook and school newspaper somewhat often

• she'd get contracted as a model as a highschool upperclassman!!! the modeling experience would also make for a very good senior photoshoot. ppl would fs be jealous of her

• she's very friendly, but kinda superficial. although she has a lot of (lowkey surface-level) friends, little to none know anything about what happened to her parents. despite her never talking about it, it's given her a deep-seated passion for pursuing justice - wants to become a prosecutor/lawyer. she usually acts very ditzy, but becomes more intense and serious when discussing these topics in-depth. would def take classes like law and society & forensics. this ambition is mainly why she cares enough to get good grades

• her insta stories are often mirror selfie ootd posts with like. london after midnight songs playing. she has a public profile with a lot of followers, and outside of her stories her account is very professional-looking... also has a more personal spam account that is essentially the exact opposite vibe lol

• very into goth music; doesn't usually wear gothic clothing to school because she feels the rokku gyaru style is more appropriate/practical (this is an AMERICAN SCHOOL yall, they just b wearing whatever) but she wears Elaborate gothic lolita outfits outside of school :3

• social outcast. (are we surprised? no.)

• used to be homeschooled in england. when he moved to america and started public school, he was put in all the special ed classes, but was pretty quickly moved despite apparent behavioral issues bc bro is Smart

• scored higher than light on an exam once and now they have a weird academic rival relationship that nobody else notices or pays attention to

• also on the tennis team. he and light hate each other lowkey but have a lot of fun playing together; one weekend they show up at the courts around the same time and end up playing a few games. they match each others (tennis) freaks so well that they go out for refreshments after! its not a date. (its kind of a date).

• doesn't have a license. doesnt Need a license bc he gets chauffeured everywhere in an expensive ass limo

• despite being an outcast everything about him is just so Weird that everyone kind of knows about him. he stands out and there are tons of rumors about him, some that get babygate-level wild

• if he and light are in the same class. oh Brother. two "erm actually" guys competing with each other to get the highest "erm actually" tally

• outside of tennis, i feel like he'd be in like. puzzle club and robotics or smth. usually sits by himself and does his own (usually much more advanced) thing during club time, and doesn't make most of the meetings. starts bringing his own puzzles bc the ones at school are too easy

• would take a visual art class for his fine arts credit; for his language credit he literally rolls a die bc he speaks so many languages (would KILL to have this problem vro)

• despite being a fucking Nerd, hes not a stickler for the rules the way light is. can and will skip class. will have ungodly amounts of sweets doordashed to the school. will sleep through boring lectures, and probably snore. will put his bare feet on the desks.. :/

• fan of the grainy powdered donuts american schools serve for breakfast sometimes. the #1 school powdered donut consumer and most reliable customer. will buy the entire stock, so other donut enjoyers are lucky he is consistently (fashionably) late.

• can roll a pretty good blunt ngl. the stoners like him.. (but mostly in a "wow i love watching this strange specimen claw at the door to its enclosure" type of way)

Without L going after Light, how long do you think it would it have taken Ryuk to go "okay this isn't funny anymore" and just write Light's name down? Would he even have done so?

The thing is Ryuk enjoys the big things and he enjoys the little things. And I don't think he was too interested in the investigation itself, just that there was someone to constantly put Light on his toes and come up with some different plan.

Ryuk loves that shit.

But Ryuk also enjoys watching Light tell women "I love you the most" and not mean a word of it, lie boldly to people's faces, Sakura TV, and of course the cocaine that is apples.

It's telling that Ryuk did not get overly bored during the six year time skip, when there was no L nor any rivals.

But back to without L, there would still be *some* investigation and Soichiro would still be a cop and depending if they figured out where Light is (not unreasonable given we know how L did it) then he is heavily involved and Light is lying to his father's face to the delight of Ryuk.

Ryuk killed Light because there was nothing more to be gained out of him, it really was the end, there was no weasling his way out this time, otherwise I don't think he would have killed him then either.

Ummmm I’ve been sitting here for a while trying to think of how to ask about this but ig I just will aha .. how do you think L would respond/ think of a partner who was abused when she was small, so ends up reporting many abusive men to the FBI, (sometimes coordinated group reports) and even sometimes gets convictions out of it? She’s also autistic and has various PTSD triggers (would he help ground her with them?) 🥺

I have various thoughts myself but I love hearing others too ❤️

L doesn’t interpret people through idealized or emotional lenses. He assesses what they do, why they do it, and what patterns emerge.

So with a partner like the one you described:

On her past abuse

If her recounts of the abuse were consistent, added up, didn’t demand anything from him, and presented as data to explain her behavior - or neutral information about her history - he would take it seriously and be mildly sympathetic and considerate, but not overly emotional about it.

However, if the past abuse is framed as a trauma that he is meant to soothe, or as an excuse for poor behavior, this is where he would start to view the framing as inefficient or misattributed, and disengage from it rather than validate it

On her reporting

This is where L becomes skeptical. 

If she knew how the FBI actually works and had evidence to support her reports, it would be largely neutral to him - however, the emotional motive wouldn’t go unnoticed and he would monitor that. He’d mostly keep his distance from it unless a specific report interested him. 

However, if her reports are unsupported by evidence, don’t lead to outcomes, are driven by emotion and bias, this would quickly reduce her credibility in his eyes and be categorized as inefficient or unreliable behavior.

On autism / PTSD (self-claimed or diagnosed):

L doesn’t care much about labels. He focuses on needs and behaviors.

If the label can be used to give a logical explanation for a behavior, he sees it as neutral to positive. If it’s just a term, it’s irrelevant. If it’s used to justify behavior without addressing it, he would see that as a logical inconsistency and take issue with it.

On Grounding 

He isn’t emotionally soothing in a conventional sense.

However, he is willing if it’s not constant and not demanded. 

L isn’t uncaring, he just doesn’t want a partner’s emotional state to be his full-time job. He prefers a partner who usually self-regulates, but he isn’t adverse to co-regulation if self-regulation fails - he’s adverse to co-regulation being frequent and treated as the default.

His regulation looks more like minimizing exposure to triggers and offering consistent, repeatable methods to stabilize - not emotional reassurance, comfort, and nurturing.

Overall 

L is also not someone who validates conclusions without evidence, even in a partner. He would separate what can be verified from what cannot.
