Midnight and Remus crept into the Slytherin dormitory. There were still a few students up, and they looked at the door, which opened on its own, with suspicious faces. They continued to watch the door as Midnight and Remus passed by them and up the staircase that led to the boys' dorm rooms.
Midnight squirmed in Remus’s arms until he let him go and dropped to the floor. They walked to the very end of the corridor. Luckily, all three of their intended victims were sixth years and slept in the same dorm. Remus must have scanned the Marauder’s map because a bodiless hand reached out of thin air and turned the doorknob of the door in front of Midnight.
As soon as they were inside, Remus took the cloak off, and Midnight transformed back into Regulus, and they got to work. Regulus performed a darkness charm, which plunged the room into total darkness. Remus stood beside Snape’s bed and gently tucked one of the Devil’s Snare’s behind his pillow. Regulus transformed back into Midnight, his job done, so he could watch Remus deposit each plant. Remus’s wolf eyes could see perfectly fine in the dark in a way that only Midnights could and not Regulus’s. They were in and out in less than five minutes. Remus picked up Midnight, and they began the long climb back up to Gryffindor Tower.
The Marauders' distraction was truly something else. Remus had to use every shortcut and sneak ways to avoid the worst of the pranks. The walls along the corridor were splattered with a rainbow of inks, little memo planes exploding ink every time they bumped into something and then zooming off to wreak more havoc.
He watched a line of little yellow rubber ducks waddle towards them. Remus nipped behind a tapestry, and Regulus couldn’t understand why. That was until the little quacking ducks suddenly gave out an overly loud quack one after the other and turned into huge geese that ran down separate corridors honking loudly.
“Those things are vicious,” Remus whispered to Midnight. They hurried on and managed to get safely back into Gryffindor Tower with no one the wiser that they’d been out after curfew.
