Thinking about Cinderella's pink and white gown in Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and how she probably designed it after her mother's dress because she never got to wear it
There is one thing I love about Cinderella, the original animated film, that I think no adaptation or remake has ever quite captured.
Cinderella was full of hope. She was full of dreams.
Her story wasn't about wanting to have fun or to meet a prince, not love, not fight or saving the world. Her story was simple.
She wanted to go to the ball to have one good evening.
Just one.The ball and the castle seemed to her like something distant, yet like a dream that was so close you could almost touch it.
I think it's the way people dream of visiting Paris.
An escape, if only for a day, to a place people dream of.
Cinderella lived in a cruel house.
With a stepmother who did not love her. With stepsisters who ordered her around. She was a servant in her own home.
But she never lost her hope and never stop dreaming.
«A dream is a wish your heart makes When you're fast asleep In dreams you lose your heartaches Whatever you wish for, you keep»
-- «A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes» song
She got up every morning, looked at the sun, and smiled. She worked and found pleasant little things in the small details. She talked to animals and was kind to them. And even if they had been ordinary and couldn't talk back, there is so much meaning in that simple act of kindness.
She lived in a cruel house.
She wanted to go to the ball, but I think she wanted more than that. She wanted to have one good evening.
One day where a dream could come true.
And she worked for it.
She sewed her own dress, all while doing her endless chores. Yes, her animal friends helped, but the intention was hers.
And when she was refused, when they cruelly destroyed her dress and her chance for something good, she did not give up.
She continued to dream. She continued to wish. And that is why her Fairy Godmother appeared for her.
Because she wished, and she worked, and she never let her hope die.
(I think the magic that made the prince forget her face is part of this. Noone recognise her. No her fsmily, no princeThe miracle wasn't about the prince remembering; it was about her experience)
And this is the true miracle.
A miracle that is like a "Make-A-Wish" for every child living in poverty or in cruel homes. The miracle of someone appearing and asking them what they dream of—and giving them something they could never achieve on their own.
It's the same spirit as all those charities and wish-granting organizations. The ones that give gifts to poor families, that organize trips, meetings with famous people, a ride in a fire truck, a chance for an education, a trip to Disneyland.
All those moments when people in the real world try to give others a glimpse of a dream they would otherwise never know?
That is what this story is about.
Because Cinderella goes to the ball. And it isn't just a happy day.
It is her chance to see a world beyond the walls of her cruel house.
And of course, somewhere in there, she meets a prince. Somewhere in there, love happens. Abd it is love story. So simple and sweetest.
And in the end, this one good day (evening ) changes her life because someone saw her, and someone looked for her.
But it all started because she was full of hope.
She was full of dreams.
She was full of kindness.
That is why the magic came.
«No matter how your heart is grieving If you keep on believing The dream that you wish will come true»
Her fight wasn't fierce or violent; her struggle was full of hope.
And her struggle was full of dreams.
And in the her story was full of love.
To be honest I always felt like one of the biggest tragedies that happened to Mickey Mouse is how he tends to be treated less of a character and more of a mascot for Disney.
And to be honest, Disney really is to blame here. I can't really blame people for seeing Mickey as a shallow boring mascot when their only exposure to him is him smiling on a t-shirt or coffee mug or maybe seeing an extremely sanitized version on a pre-school cartoon.
As someone who loves cartoon characters, I like to see them get to be themselves. And while a lot of other cartoons fade into obscurity, Mickey has a unique fate where he is still here but him as a character tends to fade instead. We were lucky to get the Rudish cartoons which helped breath life into him and really show that he can be a fun character even if it is a more exaggerated version of him. But it seems like that era is starting to end and I am not sure what will come afterwards.
And with earlier versions of him going into Public Domain soon, I know that we are going to see quite a few takes of him. I know many of those takes are coming from people who see Mickey as a stand in for all of the bad things Disney do and will probably portray him as an evil capitalist or some kind of monster. Which is whatever, I'm not going to be upset about people making their own art on their own feelings (though personally I think the joke got old after everyone tried to copy South Park and Simpsons for the millionth time in a row).
But I also feel like this is a chance to reclaim Mickey as return him as a character. Let him get to be a character with flaws and goals and not just a smiling face on merchandise. It would be nice to get some official Disney projects too. But if Disney won't, we can do it ourselves.
Disney villains are so weird because you have a scale of like
A group of women so angry they're getting old they're willing to kill for it
Witches, sorcerers
Racist, religious fanatics
Lions, tigers and bears (oh my)
Obsessed animal hunters
None of them would get along
Like can you imagine Frollo meeting Jafar. Dude is a sorcerer with a snake tongue, it'd be a fatality
Or like Clayton and all the tigers and lions. OR CRUELLA lmao the furs oh no
Yzma. Seeing. Gaston. It's over for him. You know, a few years of terrified servitude may fix him tbh
The only ones I could see team up are Maleficent and the Evil Queen as like a hot power couple
Thoughts on the new haunted mansion bride (I know you probably went through it a little when it first reopened but my fav YouTuber just made a video about it last week so I wanted to hear your thoughts)
I love Constance with my heart and soul, but from a technological and story standpoint, I know why Disney switched her out for something new. The projection + mannequin was ROUGH after so many years. And with the new film, her character just doesn’t match up with the modern interpretation of the mansion that the company has created.
Do I believe the hatchet story was too much? No. I think it was just the right amount of dark. But it doesn’t really align with what Disney does as a company these days, and in the end, this is about the Disney kids, not the adults.
I won’t speak on if the new projection is any good as I want to wait to cast judgement till I meet her for myself. I think she’s quite beautiful? But I love all the brides, including this one. I’ve heard some talk that it’s possibly AI, but that will probably never be confirmed by Disney. She looks a lot like the og beating heart bride (Emily) who I really liked and never got to see in person.
It’s a double edged sword when Disney chooses to change a staple ride so massively and without much warning. But when the world isn’t in quite so much turmoil, I’m excited to get back to Cali to see her for myself! :)
Can we please take a moment to realize Pepa and Félix are without question THE most affectionate Disney couple?
Let’s think about this for a second. The main romances are never together until the last scene, and their touches are limited to one or two kisses, and a short happily ever after montage where maybe he has his arm around her waist as they ride off into the sunset (every single Disney princess sans Nala and Belle). They’ll talk and laugh but they won’t ever actually touch or if they do it’s limited to maybe brushing hair back or touching them only when necessary to save them but that’s it. Every physical touch is all big grand romantic gestures that stand out and help move the plot along.
Belle and Beast, she ‘didn’t shudder as she touched his paw’ and then they have one romantic dance where her resting her head on his chest was the most physicality any Disney couple had in a while but again, it was a big romantic gesture designed to be noticed and move the plot along. They don’t touch just to touch. And even Nala almost every touch she had with Simba was deliberate and meant to be noticed and to move the romantic plot along (I don’t know about you but I think Pepa and Félix might have take the spot away from Nala and Simba for best Disney sex eyes)
The rare times there’s more than once romance in a movie it’s limited to what Augustin and Julieta have. A gentle simmering of sweet romance and that’s it. We hear they’re married, they may hold one another close at the end of the movie but again, very little actual physical affection.
Now let’s look at Pepa and Félix. There very first intro she’s literally grabbing him, yanking him close and lifting him up off his feet to kiss him
Then his hand is around her waist and stays that way the entire time they walk up the stairs after their first scene. No big grand gesture, no plot development, just a background note you might not even catch. Then with Antonio’s gift ceremony he takes her by the shoulders and doesn’t let go, and when they’re waiting at the door they’re completely wrapped around one another and when he gets his gift again, just a background moment, but he misses her hand and she looks at him with sheer relief and adoration
And let’s not forget the ‘fuck me’ eyes she gives him at breakfast when he gets her to calm down about the chair
During the Bruno song I can’t even count how many times his hand is around her waist and the calling card to all Pepa/Félix shippers that is ‘I’m sorry Mi Vida go onnnn!’ Where he’s singing right into her ear and neck and she’s got *that* kind of smile on her face as she dies which is as close as Disney will ever get to a couple necking
While I mentioned Disney romances only touching eachother to save the other I think theirs should count bc again, it’s just a background moment, not plot development, but when the house shakes and she falls he’s right there to catch her and help her. No plot, no big gesture, it’s not the focus of the scene… it’s just there
And then during the end song…. My god. When Bruno whips her around his hand is right there to catch her and then he pulls her close where once again , she gives him bedroom eyes, his hand is on her waist and hers is on his chest.
Also what’s even more miraculous and remarkable about it is this isn’t the star, this isn’t some 18 year old Disney princess, this is a 50 year old woman with three kids whose oldest is an adult herself, and Félix is a dark skinned Black man who is affectionate and loving and adoring, something you very rarely see in mainstream media. And what’s more is none of these moments are played for laughs. It’s straight and serious and romantic and physical and so amazing. Disney really broke the mold with them and I’m so grateful to them for it
Hey Disney,
Instead of going forward with your intended "AI short form content" slop, how about you just give your talented artists/writers/creators the freedom, time, and money they deserve to create some actual art.
Maybe that would also fix the mass of repetitive "been-there-seen-that"/ multitudes of sequels/ "live action" reboots you've been so hell bent on releasing this last decade
For someone who’s supposed to be keeping the Axiom clean, M-O has the foulest mouth out of all of them, I just know it
