With the amount of detail you have put into D4, do you have any other cultures or influences associated with the other districts?
Hi! I love this question!
I'm framing this around real-world cultures that I research in order to create the picture for the Districts themselves, as a lot of what I do is genuinely trying to find parts of our world that can resonate with these stories and histories and voices that need to be heard in order to make this into something real.
Usually my mindset when going into this is trying to study how different cultures associate with the industries these Districts represent, and also focus a ton on the text in the books to search for some clues. For example, when working through District Four I thought of cultures that historically have been very close to the ocean and whose people have been exploited for fishing. While also keeping in mind the origins of last names like Cresta, Odair and Flanagan. I also try to look up the population of those specific areas too to try and find if there's significantly large communities from those cultures. So this is far from perfect and it might change through time for me to add even more inspirations. I totally appreciate getting suggestions, as I adore researching and this is one of my favourite things to research.
I also have cultural headcanons for most Districts as well as some demographic/ethnicity headcanons and thoughts about physical features that are significant to the respective District that pop out. I also truly enjoy thinking about their gastronomy given the authority of the Capitol and their customs, so, seriously, if you want me to speak more on this, send me an ask! I'd be happy to!
District One: When I think of District One, I think of communities where classical training for the arts is reinforced and also their people are victims of fetishism and have been historically. So, my thoughts usually go to Middle European communities (French, Italian, Dutch, Swiss...) and East Asian (Korean). The later having a lot to do with the fetishization of District One by the Capitol and the way Korea has been treated by colonialism over and over. In general, when thinking about District One I think of the luxury that comes from artisan work and also the enforcement of classicism as the main artistic movement for the Capitol to later consume.
District Two: Okay, I think when looking at District Two I can't help but find it super interesting to lean into its clear referencing of Ancient Rome's military but also into Ancient Greece and specifically Sparta and Athens and the conflict they had, but specifically Spartan training for the military. Throughout history we've had a lot of very military-heavy cultures, but, because of District Two's Industry publicly being masonry as well as their closeness to mountains, I also think it can be so interesting to also link its culture to Latin America (especifically Colombia) and to East Asia (especifically Japan). Also, of course, American history and its links to military.
Also, it's important to note my friend @hadleyswhore has so many wonderful District Two headcanons and an insane worldbuilding for it, so, when I have questions I tend to turn to her! Like, honestly, credits to her entirely for the way I view District Two, cause she has genuinely the best ideas when it comes to it and makes it feel so real and interesting.
District Three: With District Three I wanted to look into a lot of the countries that export technology globally and also keep into consideration cultures that used to be very technologically advanced, having Imperialism take advantage of them. I kept thinking about not only the African American community and their presence in factories but also about the South Asian communities, especially Indian communities, Persian and so on.
District Four: As we know, I have District Four have a lot of influences from Southeast Asia, Polynesia, Latin America (Chile, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil), Ireland and Scotland. I feel like I already yap about this so much, but I'd be happy to break down the reasoning for them, mostly related to years of history, customs and traditions when it comes to fishing.
District Five: For District Five (one of my underrated favorites) I usually think of Middle Eastern countries and communities. I also liked investigating Indigenous people in Nevada and Arizona and like to think there is a prominent Indigenous community in the District. Can't stop thinking about how interesting it would be to have a people that care so profoundly about the land being put in the position to be forced to exploit it for energy, and how they'd be able to reclaim this entire situation.
District Six: Okay, hear me out on this, but, when thinking about District Six I kind of have always considered a TON of Roma influence for it. It all started with me thinking about how cruel and tragic it would be for them to force Roma people to create transport vehicles and use their knowledge on historically being nomads while being stuck in the same District and now I can't stop thinking about it. I also have the headcanon that the community is very resilient and fought for rebellion a lot, which is one reason why morphlin was brought into the equation as a way to control them. I also lean a lot into different East European influences when picturing District Six and it's culture.
District Seven: I loved exploring District Seven. I found myself giving it a very prominent East Asian community and finding that essential to understand its culture and the treatment these people have. I also lean a lot into Canadian roots, the Inuit people, different European references (specifically from Norse countries) and African-American culture coming as well as reference to African-Americans becoming so essential in the timber Industry in America after the Civil War.
District Eight: For District Eight I always lean into a lot of different references, from Middle Eastern to South Asian and also sprinkling in some Eastern European roots. I feel like if you want to study District Eight it's very interesting to study the drastic change between luxury fabric being made and sweatshops. I believe both take place in District Eight. I also always lean into some Peruvian, Ecuadorian influences when considering this District and its culture.
District Nine: Another underrated fave of mine. When I turn to Ditrict Nine I have always thought of the Northern African influences it could have, especially with Egypt's relatinon to wheat. I also learnt about Argentina being one of the main wheat exports and now can't stop thinking about it. When picturing District Nine's culture I imagine some Mediterranean roots, Northern African influences and some South Asian. In general, I believe Nine has so much potential to be studied as grain has been an essential staple of nearly every country's cuisine and therefore it comes with a ton of connotations. The Hunger Games is always nodding towards bread as symbolic for many reasons.
District Ten: I think I agree with the fandom consensus here a lot! I lean towards a lot of cowboy culture for it and also have always considered Mexico and Uruguay as huge parts of the demographic and the culture. With Mexico having a ton of weight in the way the entire District's culture is.
District Eleven: African American histories about their presence in agriculture. I'd say when I think about Eleven I think a lot about the way black communities were exploited in the agriculture industry and find that there are a lot of incredibly interesting customs and histories to find inspiration on and to further understand the way District Eleven could be.
District Twelve: As we know from the Books, there's a prominent Indigenous community that certainly has its effects on the District's culture. In general, Appalachian history and culture has a lot of fascinating things to turn to to investigate. I also have written in my notes to look into the Silesia Region (around Poland, Zcech Republic and Germany) to find more info, specifically when it comes to families from the City.
District Thirteen: I believe the books have always made me think of Thirteen having a lot of real life influences in Eastern Europe and also specifically making me think of these countries during the Cold War.
Capitol: I think, for me, when I think of the Capitol I have the tendency to simply look at modern media and the way it interacts with the real world and the world's elites and billionaires. We are also given some information in Mockingjay about the less rich parts of the city and how people live there and that economic gap makes me think a lot of huge, richer cities. And Ialso have to mention the countless hints at Ancient Rome, which are always on my mind when thinking of the Capitol.
I hope this gives an overall view on influences, cultures and presences I personally turn to when I write about those Districts. I love talking about worldbuilding and researching real life cultures and using them as the foundation of this one, mostly because I believe Suzanne Collins was very intentional when it came to diversity in the books but I feel like there are a lot of gasps for us to fill, which i always fun! I also think every culture deserves to be appreciated and their history with industries and survival, so... Yeah. This might also just be me being a poc talking! haha!
Thank you SO MUCH for this question. I had so much fun with it, genuinely!
