I really love how the Owl House portrays sibling relationships. There are four sets of siblings in the show: Luz and her adoptive brother King and adoptive sister Vee, Amity and her older twin siblings Edric & Emira, Edalyn and her sister Lilith, and Philip and his older brother Caleb.

Luz didn’t grow up with any siblings; at the start of the show she’s spent 14 years as an only child. When she taken in by Eda King goes from a roommate/pet to a friend to a big brother. They aren’t even the same species, and Luz still loves him fiercely and tries to stay behind in the boiling isles to save him when the world is actively ending. They’ve known one another for three months tops. Vee and Luz sadly get very little time to bond on screen, but after their initial fight about Luz running away and Vee impersonating her, the two pretty quickly become ride or die for one another. Luz is, in many ways, defined by how fiercely she cares for others (even if not for herself) and that extends very quickly to her found family. I have two younger siblings by blood, as well as several cousins I am very close with and a few friends who might as well be siblings. I’d stay behind in the apocalypse for them too. It’s an honest portrayal of how much that kind of bond means, especially as an older sibling—you don’t want your younger sibling to carry burdens like King does, ever.

Every other set of siblings in the show is much less functional, and yet all but one still love one another. Ed and Em start off as real assholes to Amity, pranking and teasing her. We don’t get a ton of time with them but it’s pretty clear that’s because, at least at first, they view Amity as an extension of their parents’ will. And Amity views the twins as immune from the kind of punishments (child abuse) she suffers. As Amity shrugs off her mother’s yoke and the twins realize Amity is, y’know, the victim here it becomes a much more playful dynamic where the three of them support one another and defend one another against their parents. Like I said; I have younger siblings. Especially when we were all teens/tweens we got on one another’s nerves constantly, but we still care about one another. While we thankfully do not have abusive parents, if they were I know I would close ranks around my siblings too.

Eda and Lilith are the two who break my heart the most. As kids they were super close but due to competing with one another, Lilith curses Eda. Because she’s like 16 and an idiot. After that, Lilith is consumed by guilt but her parents reaction also plays into her inferiority complex. Lilith spends twenty years buying Belos’s BS to convince herself she isn’t an absolute monster and try to make it right—and all she does is push Eda away more. Eda, meanwhile, thinks Lilith just drank the kool-aid; until Agony of a Witch, when Eda finds out her sister did this and has continued to try an arrest her all as some sort of insane attempt to prove she’s better. Until Lilith makes it right and splits the curse and abandons the coven. I think a lot about how Lilith was keeping that secret for decades, how she was so consumed by guilt. Like I said, my siblings and I tormented one another as kids and while I never did anything like permanently disable one of them, there’s some shit I feel bad about doing as a teenager. Despite all of that, Lilith still can make things right and take restorative justice, and Eda accepts her pretty readily. Because after all that they are still fundamentally sisters who love one another.

Finally, the Wittebane brothers are the ones we know the least about—especially Caleb. We know that they arrived as orphans in Gravesfield in the 1600s, and that Caleb was Philip’s defacto guardian. We know they were puritans, and we know Evelyn led Caleb into the Boiling Isles and that Philip followed. Caleb and Evelyn got together, had a kid, and Philip—so blinded by rage and bigotry—murdered Caleb. He killed his own brother. To me that’s unimaginable. And Philip, whether he admits it or not, is pretty clearly guilty and absolutely haunted by this—a macrocosm of Lilith’s guilt over cursing Eda. Instead of using this guilt to reflect or choose to be better, maybe turn himself in for his crimes or just leave witchkind and his unborn nibling alone, Philip gets lost in his anger. He blames all witches, routinely brings his brother back to life seemingly not to undo killing him but to fix Caleb to his liking. And not once does it work. Every single Grimwalker realizes the monster Belos is Philip kills them. In the end, he still sees Hunter as just another Caleb, as the witches around him as more Evelyns. He literally hallucinates the ghosts of his dead brothers and all his copies. And he refuses to once consider that maybe, just maybe, murdering and resurrecting and abusing and murdering your brother again and again is a bad thing and not something done out of love. He dies still not understanding it.

I dunno, siblings can be your best friends and a constant irritant who knows all your worst fears. You can love and protect and deeply wound your siblings. Sometimes they’re both at the same time. Sometimes they’re just someone with the same parents you don’t know very well. I like that the Owl House shows us every facet of that dynamic, and that it shows us siblings who fight, siblings who choose to make up and get better, and siblings where one member is wholly unwilling to do that. It’s really solid writing.
