How literate is Ferelden?

The Wiki says that there is very little formal education and they may be illiterate. I want to hear what anyone else says!

Cullen's family, for example, live in a very rural area of Ferelden and know how to read and write as evident by Mia's letters. Cullen talks about being from such a humble background of farmers and since Ferelden is based on Medieval England, not many knew how to read IRL. However, he could. Some people on reddit mentioned it could be the Chantry teaching people the basics. Hawke can read and write but Leandra is nobility and would know how to read. People in the Chantry know how to read. People in the Mage Circles know how to read. I don't know about the Dalish. I know they focus on oral history, but that doesn't mean they don't know how to read. They may choose not to, though. We see many codex entries throughout the games from various people so I would assume literacy is relatively high? People do enjoy Varric's books, for example, but that could again be only certain groups. I'd be curious about the Avvar, too.
