Entr’acte
“I suppose I’ve been so caught up in you and I that I didn’t realize Andrew was even seeing anyone,” Hannibal commented to his lover on the phone. She told him that she had to cancel their plans at the Four Seasons--dinner and dancing there had now become a regular date night for them there, and the waiters and bartenders knew Hannibal by sight as well as Rachel. They had settled into a contended routine as Hannibal continued to work towards home-ownership and a private practice.
Before even discussing the matter, he and Rachel had an unspoken agreement that they would be accompanying one another to this wedding. It was to be right after Christmas, a somewhat surprising time to be married, Hannibal thought. Another opportunity to see Baltimore society and be seen--on Rachel DuBerry’s arm. By now he was a casual acquaintance of at least some people in her circle thanks to the lunch dates she had helped arrange.
Hannibal was, in brief, quite happy with his life at the moment.
He leaned against the nurse’s station. Rachel had called him here at the hospital--unusual enough--to let him know that something had come up to prevent her from making dinner that evening, and he had only just had the opportunity to call her back.
“Now: what in the world has ‘come up,’ Rachel?” he asked. His voice betrayed only curiosity, no annoyance. He only wanted to know what was happening in her life and if he could be of assistance.
Even as they spoke, a car pulled into Rachel's driveway. The vehicle itself belonged to Edward DuBerry, but the petite figure who stepped out was that of Anna, her dark hair curled prettily around her face. She practically ran for her sister’s front door and didn’t even bother to ring the bell before she burst in. Her eyes and face were alight, and beneath her requisite her outfit--a maroon silk blouse tucked into high-waisted dark wash jeans--had been carefully chosen to seem thrown together while still looking chic.
“Tony?” she called. “Rach?”
attentively listening to the entr'acte to see what new melodies I have to prepare for and what shitty act one melodies I have to indulge
