The Kims
Mun meets Seokjin’s parents for the first time.
*Seokjin’s POV*
“Why am I lowkey nervous to meet your family?” Mun asked with a laugh as she sat next to me on the train. “Just think of it as visiting your friends Eomuk and Odeng rather than meeting my family… It’s not like you’re meeting your future in-laws or anything like that!” I replied. Deep down, I’ve been in love with Mun for the past 5 months I’ve known her. I was feeling nervous of her meeting my family for the first time, as if I were introducing her to them as my girlfriend or something. Truthfully, our purpose in visiting my family was to see my sugar gliders.
Eomuk and Odeng normally stayed with me at the dorms, but I recently transported them to my parents’ house, as I will be leaving in about a month for our Wings world tour. Mun had met them before and fell in love with them. She was always so sweet to them and visited the dorms often just to see them. When I decided to go visit them at my parents’ one last time before the tour, I decided to bring Mn along with me to see them… but also to meet my parents… Since she would be alone while I was gone, I thought it would be nice for her to have at least one connection in case of emergency. “Ah, this is our stop,” I said, standing up as the train began to slow down.
Mun stood up beside me and we both balanced as the moving train came to a stop. We hopped out into the cold winter evening and walked down a couple blocks. My parents lived in the outskirts of town, where things weren’t too busy, and as we approached their house, I heard Mun say under her breath, “cute.” I smiled to myself, glad she already liked their cozy house as we walked up the sidewalk to the front door. I rang the doorbell and immediately heard our dog Jjangu barking on the other side of the door.
Mom opened the door, and Jjangu walked up to me and jumped up on me the best he could, as he was rather old. “Jjangu-ah!!” I said excitingly, picking the little dog up as he jumped at me. He then noticed Mun next to me and began to sniff the air towards her, so I positioned him closer so that he could smell her better. Mun looked at him excitedly and said, “he’s so cute!!!” and began petting his head, which he allowed. “He warmed up to you so fast,” Mom said to Mun. “Oh, so sorry,” I said, realizing that I was being improper and didn’t make introductions.
“Mom, this is my friend Mun… and Mun, this is my mother,” I said, setting Jjangu down so I could give Mom a hug and kiss her cheek. “Hello Seokjin,” she said as I kissed her. “Mun, it is so nice to meet you. Seokjin has told me a lot about you!” she said to Mun, causing me to blush slightly. “Not a lot!!” I said embarrassedly as I walked into the house, with Mun close behind. “Is Dad home?” I asked, looking around. “Yes, he’s back in the garden,” Mom said.
“Please make yourself at home, Mun! I am finishing up supper right now!” she added before disappearing into the kitchen, with Jjangu following closely behind. I felt Mun gently elbow my arm. I looked down at her and she whispered, “I like her…” I smiled and said, “she likes you and has been wanting to meet you!” Mun raised both eyebrows and said, “so you have told her a lot about me, then?” to which I tactfully ignored by drawing my attention to the sugar glider cage in the corner of the room. “Ah! There they are!” I said, walking in that direction.
“Eomuk!! Odeng!!” I called as I approached the cage. The sudden noise caused them to stir and come out of their little house. I opened the cage carefully and reached in. I picked up Eomuk gently and put him on my shoulder, then gently put Odeng on Mun’s shoulder. “Hey, buddy!! Remember me??” Mun asked sweetly as Odeng sat on her shoulder, sniffing her hair as he clung to her shirt. “You must be Mun,” the voice of my father came from the direction of the backyard, as he had just entered the house.
Mun turned and bowed politely, causing Odeng to fall off her shoulder. He got into gliding position, but Mun caught him before he could fall to the ground. “It’s nice to meet you,” Mun said as she held Odeng in her arms now. Dad smiled at her and said, “Odeng seems to trust you.” “Mun-ah visited them a lot when they were at the dorms,” I commented, taking Eomuk off my shoulder and putting him on hers, so that both sugar gliders were now with Mun. “I think they like you better than they like us,” Dad commented as he watched.
At that moment, Mom and Jjangu joined us in the living room, and she smiled at seeing Mun with Eomuk and Odeng. “They love you, Mun!!” she said, causing Mun to blush. “Well, I’ve grown to love them… they’re so fun to have around,” she said. “Well, supper is ready! I assume you two are eating with us?” Mom asked, causing Mun to look over at me. I nodded and said, “ah, of course we will eat with you,” taking Eomuk off my shoulder and helping me put the two gliders back in their cage.
We gathered around the table, with Mun sitting across from me, and ate the delicious soup my mom made, which was appropriate for the wintery weather outside. My parents asked Mun various questions… about her work, her family, and what it was like being friends with an idol, and they asked me all about the upcoming tour. “You know, Mun, you would probably do a better job watching Eomuk and Odeng than us while Seokjin is gone… and since you love them so much, would you care to watch over them?” Dad asked. Mun smiled and said, “I wish… I’m afraid my apartment complex won’t allow any animals.”
“Jjangu likes you too!” I said, pointing out how he never left Mun’s feet since we sat down for supper. “Well, you know where we live now, so you are more than welcome to come and visit them anytime you’d like while Seokjin is away,” my mother invited, causing me to smile to myself. It was my goal for them to hit it off, so I felt accomplished in my mission. Mun hated being alone, and I knew that having someone around would be a great comfort to her. She smiled and nodded at Mom. “That is very kind of you, I may have to take you up on that,” she said, politely.
After we finished eating, Mun helped my mom clean up the table and wash dishes while I went back into the living room to see Odeng and Eomuk again. “She’s very sweet,” Dad said as he joined me in the living room. I could feel my ears turning red and hoped to myself that he wouldn’t noticed. “She’s a good friend,” I replied, sitting down on the couch with both sugar gliders in my hands. “You brought her here to make sure she had someone while you are gone, right?” he asked. My father knew me too well.
I nodded. “Her sister is our makeup stylist and is coming with us. I don’t want her to feel like she was left alone in Korea,” I said. Dad came over and patted my shoulder. “We’ll keep an eye on her,” he said before heading back outside to finish tending to his garden. After a few minutes, Mun appeared from the kitchen, with little Jjangu following behind her. “Wow! Why does he like you so much??” I asked, bewildered. Mun sat on the couch with the dog right beside her. She held onto him to make sure he didn’t bother the gliders sitting in my lap.
Mom joined us in the living room, and we continued to talk for a bit until I noticed the time. “I guess we better go if we want to catch the train back into town,” I said, getting up from my seat and putting Eomuk and Odeng back in their cage. “Goodbye boys!!” I said to them as I did so. “Please, don’t hesitate to call me any time! We can maybe have a cooking day or something!” I heard Mom say to Mun as I turned back towards them. “I would love that… your soup was so good, even better than Seokjinie’s! Which is saying a lot,” Mun replied with a small wink at me, causing me to smile.
We both stuck our heads out the back door to say goodbye to Dad, then said goodbye to Mom one more time before heading out into the cold, dark winter night. “So, what do you think of the Kim clan? You now know my whole family except my brother,” I said as we walked to the train station. “I think I love them! They’re so sweet and kind… I can see where you get it from!” Mun replied. “Oh, stop, you’re making me blush,” I joked, though I was definitely blushing.
“I can tell they really like you, though… See? I told you there was no reason to be so nervous!” I said to her. “Yeah… Like you said, it wasn’t like I was meeting my future in-laws or anything,” she retorted, reminding me of what I had said earlier. “Yeah… that would be ridiculous…” I said, trying to make sure she didn’t get the wrong idea and feel weird about us. A cold blast of wind blew against us, causing Mun to shiver. I felt her interlock her arm around mine next to her, hugging it tightly, hoping it would give her more warmth. *Yeah… that would be ridiculous…* I repeated to myself, hoping I didn’t get the wrong idea and get even more attached to the idea of us dating.

The pet store that you worked at believed in letting loose some of the animals during the day. What did that mean for you? Chaos.
Every day there’s always a cat fight, or dogs that will casually shit on the floor. It wouldn’t be too bad if there was more than one person scheduled at a time, but no. There’s not today. Because the owners, your parents, believed that you could handle it on your own for hours on end before scheduling help to cut back on costs.
What could go wrong?
A lot, that’s the answer.
