"Good morning Sunshine!" A tall boy exclaims as he yanks open the door to the sleeping boy's room, his voice cutting through the morning silence. "Ughhh," Beomgyu groans, pulling his blanket over his head. "Fuck off." He shifts back into a comfortable spot, desperate for more sleep.
"Is that any way to talk to your best friend, hm?" The tall boy, Kai, now hovers above Beomgyu with a teasing smile, his brown eyes gleaming with mischief. Beomgyu opens his eyes, staring blankly back into Kai's playful gaze. "Kai…" His mouth opens, and a stream of profanities and threats flow out.
Needless to say, Kai was exiting the room alone after that encounter. Beomgyu, finally satisfied with his reunion with silence, attempts to get back into his once comfortable position. However, no amount of tossing and turning helps him find it. So, he whines and sits up on his bed, hair sticking out in all directions.
One leg of his pajama pants is stuck at the fold of his knee, while the other dangles freely. Beomgyu limply walks out of his room, shielding his eyes from the brightness of the living room. He groans, steps back, but then decides he might as well get something to eat. In the kitchen, he is met with the sight of his early-bird friends eating a hefty breakfast—or lunch? Brunch, he supposes.
"Look who decided to show up," Beomgyu's brother, Soobin, states with a smirk. Sitting next to Soobin is Yeonjun, who adds, "No way you just woke up now. It's almost noon, Gyu."
"Not you pretending as if you didn't JUST wake up as well," Taehyun chuckles, grabbing an orange juice box from the fridge. "You're gonna give me a bad rep. I woke up at a reasonably early hour. You just wouldn't know since you torture yourself every day by waking up at 5 am to work out or something," Yeonjun retorts.
"Oh my god, is that what he's been doing these days? I thought he got himself a girl. I guess he's just bulking up," Kai laughs out.
"Yeah, okay, and what's wrong with that? At least I'll be prepared in case there's a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion. Can't say the same for you two," Taehyun counters childishly, drinking from the juice bottle before heading over to sit beside his friends.
Beomgyu, still too tired for this level of conversation, walks over to Soobin, who is as unbothered as always, focused on chewing as much as he can while others are distracted. Beomgyu sits down next to him and starts eating as well.
And that's how Saturday morning went for Beomgyu.
You look across the road before you cross.
It's nighttime, and half the city is asleep while the other half is full of youngsters littering the streets. You're a part of the latter. "I'm serious, Tyun." You're on a call with your online friend Taehyun, "I'm so scared. What if I fail all my courses and nobody likes me—"
Taehyun cuts you off, "No, trust me. You'll do great here, and you'll fit right in. And you'll always have me anyway." You sigh. He seems to always know exactly what to say to calm your nerves. "Yeah, true. Thanks, Tyun—"
A loud, approaching sound from your right grabs your attention. You turn to look and are blinded by two bright headlights. Your mind races, trying to process the speeding car barreling toward you. There's no time to react. You close your eyes and brace yourself, awaiting the pain of a crash.
Suddenly, you feel two strong hands grab you from behind and hurl you onto the pavement behind you. The impact knocks the wind out of you, but you're alive. You open your eyes, disoriented and shaken. Your hair and clothes are disheveled, and you frantically check for injuries. The car speeds past where you stood just moments ago. You let out a breath you weren't aware you were holding and lay your head back onto the floor underneath you, relieved.
"Ow," you hear, realizing you're sprawled across a stranger. You scramble to your feet, but your knees give out, and you collapse back onto him. "OW!" he yells louder this time. "I'm so sorry, I—" You start, but the stranger pushes you off roughly.
"Ow..." It's your turn to groan. You get up slowly, your nerves rattled by the man's shrieks of pain. You extend a hand to help him up, but he just shakes his head and stands on his own.
"I'm sorry I didn't notice I was on top of you. Thank you so mu—"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," he interrupts. "Why were you walking with your eyes up your ass?"
"Excuse me?" you snap back, lifting your right eyebrow in annoyance.
The man sighs and looks down. That's when you notice his ripped clothes and your open bag with its contents scattered across the pavement. Panic sets in as you search for your phone. Taehyun must have heard everything. You spot your phone on the road, smashed beyond repair. "Shit, shit, shit… no…" You pick it up, confirming there's no hope of fixing it. You sigh heavily.
You turn back to see the stranger gathering your belongings. This mix of helpfulness and rudeness confuses you. Nevertheless, you owe him your life. "Thank you so much. I don't know how to repay you, um…" You pause, waiting for his name, but he just stares at you, annoyed. You scoff and look away. Whatever.
You snatch your bag from his hands and start walking in your original direction, but without your GPS, you're lost. You turn back to the stranger. "Um, do you know a place nearby called 'HotWire?'"
"No. Bye," he replies, walking away. Ugh, what's his deal? You decide to follow him.
"What are you doing?" he asks, glancing at you from the side of his shoulder with pinched eyebrows.
"I think you're injured. Let me help you reach your destination safely." The lie you formed off the top of your head, is not the best, but it's a bit believable, right? He stops and sighs deeply. "Okay, listen. I know a... friend who can take you to HotWire. They'll be here soon. I'll just tell them to drop you off."
You smile, relieved. "Okay!" He looks away, and you drop your smile.
"Just don't bother me while we're in the car. Stay far away." You roll your eyes. "Yeah, don't worry. We're not magnets. I'll manage."
"Good then." He grins finding your response witty, and takes off his ripped jacket, revealing his muscular physique. You swallow hard, caught staring. He chuckles, amused by your reaction. You quickly look away, embarrassed.
You wait awkwardly for his friend, your phone broken and the mysterious stranger silent beside you.
You swear six hours have passed, but it's only been 15 minutes. A small sports car approaches, and you practically run towards it. In the driver's seat is a gorgeous girl, and in the passenger seat, another handsome man. You squeeze into the backseat after the stranger jumps in without a word.
"Um, who is this?" the girl asks, noticing your unfamiliar presence.
"Some random blind chick who almost got hit by a car," the stranger says, but you quickly cut him off.
"Hi, my name is YN. I almost got into a car crash, but this extremely courageous young fella saved my life." You say sarcastically and extend your hand to the girl, but she just looks you up and down.
The man in the passenger seat laughs heartily, earning an eye roll from the stranger beside you. He wipes his eyes and shakes your hand. "Hi, YN. Sorry that happened to you. Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks," you reply, appreciating his concern.
"Glad to hear, there are many kids rolling the streets at this time, many of them drunk. or high. or high and drunk. Anyway, it was probably a group of idiots in that car.". he says.
He introduces himself. "I'm Hyunjin, and this overly-jealous girl beside me is my twin sister, Yeji. And the charming piece of sunshine beside you is my dear friend. You probably already know his name, no?" You look the male beside you in the eyes and reply, "No, I don't know his name." Your answer somehow seems to please Yeji and her face relaxes slightly as she faces you. Hyunjin laughs, it's not an enjoyable laugh it's more of a ridiculing type of laugh.
"Well I'm Junyoung. Hyunjin stop laughing like a hyena before I push a stick into the side of your throat." Junyoung says, tone serious. But Hyunjin only laughs harder.
Yeji sighs, annoyed. "What are you doing in the car? Surely you can walk since you seem fine," she says, fiddling with her hair and eyeing you through the rearview mirror.
"She wants to go to HotWire. Drive her there," Junyoung commands. Hyunjin stops laughing at the mention of the bar. Yeji twists her head towards you, as if she heard a triggering word.
And you are confused by this trio.
During the car ride, you break the ice by explaining that you arrived in the city three days ago to study at the famous university, GreenWood. You mention you're heading to HotWire to meet your freshmen peers. You leave out the part about accidentally joining the freshmen group chat and skipping ahead to sophomore year since none of that would matter to the preoccupied driver Yeji and phone addict Junyoung. Hyunjin weirdly enough, was the only one actively listening to you. . However, you do share that Taehyun, your online friend, convinced you to study here. Speaking of Taehyun, using Hyunjin's phone, you reassured Taehyun that you were fine despite his incessant worrying.
You also miss out mentioning the fact that Taehyun, your online friend that you'll finally get to meet, is the person that convinced you to pursue a student life away from your family and friends because you've always wanted to study in that university. Speaking of Taehyun, you managed to call him through Hyunjin's phone. You reassured him that you were all fine despite his incessant worrying.
Eventually, you unite with your freshmen peers, get drunk, and get dropped off at your dorm by some random person. Once you arrive and lay on your tiny couch, you feel a paper in your pocket. You pull it out to find Hyunjin's number with a badly-drawn wink emoji. Drunk you doesn't care and laughs.
And that's how your Saturday night went.
