Freddie Redd, R.I.P.

Freddie Redd, that most nomadic pianist/composer best known for his music for 1959 experimental play The Connection, has died at age 92 on March 17th. Since the early ‘50s, he has been an active contributor to the jazz scenes in New York, Sweden, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. among others. Freddie was kind, affable and spoke in a soft, soothing baritone voice. He was active until just a few years ago. He will be missed. Photograph by Francis Wolff © Mosaic Images.

Freddie Redd: The Connection

Steven Cerra dedicates a Jazz Profiles post to Freddie Redd’s The Connection, reproducing Ira Gitler’s liner notes to the original Blue Note album. The album not only put Freddie Redd center stage, but provided employment for Jackie Mclean and his understudy Tina Brooks, who were barred from working New York clubs because of the draconian cabaret laws of the time. Cecil Taylor later took Redd’s place with a quartet that included Archie Shepp. On the west coast, Dexter Gordon composed the music and headed up a quartet for the LA production of the play. So The Connection had a sizable impact on the 1960 jazz scene.

Freddie Redd - CONNECTION (1961) The last Beatniks Movie

やっと手に入れました。freddie redd「The Conection」。国内盤ですが、新品同様でとても良い状態です。　

2019年5月、ツアー中に静岡ドットクールで聴かせて貰って、それからずっと探してました。幸いにごく普通のお値段で購入出来ましたが、お店で見かけたのはこの2年3ヶ月で1度だけ。それも国内盤で2800円…高いよ！って買わなかったら二度とお目に掛かりませんでした。ヤフオクではすぐ5000円程の値に釣り上がるので手が出ません。それ程の人気盤。

レッドの曲が魅力的で、マクリーンも絶好調。他のメンバーは僕は全然知らないのですが凄く良いバンドです。

麻薬とジャズを扱ったオフブロードウェイの音楽演劇の劇中曲をアルバム化した物です。実際にミュージシャンが劇中に演奏し、また、このアルバムはそのオリジナル・キャストで録音されています。故に緻密で完成度の高い演奏となってると思います。ゆっくり繰り返し聴きたいです。

しかし、'19年のツアーも台風来てたんだ…。オレ、雨男過ぎる。
