Feng Xun x Male Reader
Blue and orange colored the sky of the evening today, the warm sun embraced every corner of the small town and its habitants. A young man yawned as he walked down the streets, a bag full of groceries on his hand as he made his way home. He can't believe he let you convince him go to the market to buy ingredients for a new dish you wanted to try, oh well, at least he won't need to cook tonight.
The small house you two bought was cozy, big enough for you two and your three cats Apple, Lime and Banana. You named the cats, Feng didn't object.
He opened the door, and the little crystals hanging from the rooftop knocked together, creating a sweet melody which made his presence known.
"Babe? I'm home," he said as he closed the door behind him. Lime and Apple greeted him together, rubbing the long of their bodies against his legs. The esper lowered down to caress their little furry heads, receiving soft mewls from his furry friends.
Steps were then heard approaching the entrance, from the kitchen and wearing a yellow apron, you appeared with big, bright eyes and a childish smile. "You're finally here!" You ran to him and quickly took the bag from his hand, opening it to see its content. "You have the ingredients! You're the best!" You gave his cheek a quick kiss, to which he smiled lazily, before you went back to the kitchen. "You'll see, it'll be so delicious you'll want more!"
Feng Xun wasn't sure about that, last time you followed the recipe you found in the swiftspace, he couldn't leave the bathroom for hours.
He sighed, his tired smile highlighting the fact that he has given up on dying of old age. The long haired man followed you from behind, on the way he gave a small kiss on the top of Banana's fluffy head, the cat that was sleeping on his tree.
The sight of you quickly preparing all the ingredients he brought home came to view, celery, star anise, cinnamon sticks among others, filipino food, that's what you said you were going to try cooking tonight. The beef chins were already on the pan, slowly cooking, and the garlic was already minced. Seems you have quite advanced already. "Need help?" he offered as he removed his coat, leaving it on a chair as he went to wash his hands.
"Yes please, can you chop the onion for me? Thank you love."
He found the onion in question, a big one. "The whole onion?" You nodded. The esper took the nearest knife he found and started cutting the onion with ease.
Music played on the radio of the kitchen, and Apple with Lime were playing with Feng Xun's long hair.
"By the way, Li Ling says hi," said Feng Xun, interrupting the silence.
"Oh really? He's here in town?" Li Ling was a close friend of Feng Xun, despite the latter not being part of the Esper Union, Feng was always ready to help his friends.
The black haired man nodded, before letting silence return, only interrupted with one or two yawns from him.
Minutes later, you and Feng were sitting together, drinking tea as you waited for the meal to be fully cooked, it's already been thirty minutes, twenty more to go.
The loud 'tud' of your cup on the table made Feng Xun jump on his position, startled, but what truly scared him was those big, wide eyes of yours and that large smile, indicating you had an idea.
"Let's create ghosts!"
Huh?? "Huh?"
"I've just got a brilliant idea, Feng!" you exclaimed as you stood up from the cushions.
"I can already tell it's also a terribly bad idea," he came back with, finishing his tea, the only thing that could relax him right now.
You didn't pay much mind to his words, already driving the train with your crazy ideas. "We can use the chicken wires, and build statues with it!"
"Honey," he sighed. "We have elderly people as neighbours, let them enjoy their last years in peace." Miss Lang will die from a stroke if she ever sees a ghost.
Of course, your brilliant mind was already locked in. You went to serve the food in small bowls, and set the table ready for dinner.
Tomorrow, you'll start doing them ghosts you're so excited for.
"Need help?" It wasn't every morning you'd wake up so early, six in the morning to be precise, and it wasn't usual of Feng Xun himself as well.
You groaned as you struggled to give the wires the shape you wanted them to get.
"Uhm, would you mind?"
It did take a while, and also some cuts due to the wire ends, but after thoroughly working for hours with the help of your amazing partner, you were able to make your first only statue of a... uhm...person? It looked a little bit wrecked, it was supposed to look like a woman holding a book...it looks more like a person melting due to the sun.
Either way, you were proud. You were admiring your work of art, ignoring the fifth yawn of your partner.
"I'm going back to bed now," he said, leaving you in the backyard of your house.
It didn't matter, you'll give some company to Tahlia, the melting ghost.
Feng Xun helped Miss Lang carrying boxes inside her house, she was redecorating the place, that's what she said.
"Feng, can you do me another favor? I'll give you some yens in exchange," she asked once Feng finished moving the last box.
The esper nodded, not putting too much mind of the numerous favors the old lady was asking for. "Of course Miss Lang, what do you need? Is it another branch of tree that is blocking the sunlight?"
The old woman shook her trembling head. "Oh no, no, it has to do with bad spirits."
Feng Xun raised an eyebrow, confused. Bad spirits? He did believe in them, but didn't know he'd have to deal with them directly now.
Miss Lang took the loose sleeve of the young esper and led him outside of the house. Standing at the doorsteps, she pointed with a trembling, skinny finger the backyard of his own house.
"There's a ghost behind your house, it was moving last night." Last night there was some wind, no surprises the ghost was moving. "Can you scare it with your powers or anything of that sort?"
Feng Xun let out a soft chuckle, he told you it was a bad idea, didn't he? "Uhm, Miss Lang, that isn't a ghost."
"Nonsense, it is a ghost, it was moving last night! I saw it with my two own eyes!" The same eyes that were loosing good eyesight, by the way. She turned around, ready to make her leave. "Be a good boy and scare it away, but be nice to it, it might be an ancestor of yours."
Melting ghost, an ancestor of Feng Xun, that would be interesting.
He sighed deeply, and made his way towards the backyard. Once face to face with the poorly made statue of chicken wire, he heard Miss Lang shout to open a portal for the ghost, as if Feng Xun knew how to open portals.
Seeing that Miss Lang was observing, he groaned, already feeling guilty for what he was about to do. "I'm so sorry, Y/n." He got in position, and casted One Harmony, which was the closest thing he had as a "portal". The divine power of Fu Xi brought destruction on the poor melted ghost, making it disappear, chattered into small pieces. Oh boy, he has now a funny story to tell you.
"Thank you Feng Xun! I'll prepare some cookies right now for you!" shouted Miss Lang, and the young esper just gave her a thumbs up. Will you accept green tea cookies as an offering of apology?
You were trying to understand the story as you kept munching on the tasty cookies Feng Xun brought home today.
"So, if I got this clear, Miss Lang thought our statue was a real ghost, and sent you to destroy it?" you repeated, it was funny, to be honest.
Feng Xun had his head on your lap and a small book over his eyes, blocking the light so he could rest his eyes. "Mhm. Because of you, I became a ghost hunter now." Friends of Miss Lang heard the word and spread it around, now the long haired man heard petitions for him to scare the cat, the dog, the chicken and ghosts with his divine power. How many wire statues were there in this small town?
You chuckled, oh well, at least now you have delicious cookies. Your hand went down to caress his cheek. "Can we build another one?"
"Absolutely not." You pouted and moved the book away from his eyes. "Ngh..."
"Sometimes I wonder how we got together."
Feng Xun shrugged. "It must have been fate."
"Aaaaw, are you saying you saw the future and still wanted to stay with me?" you asked with naivety.
"My ability doesn't work like that exactly. But even if I saw the distant future, I'd still stay with you." At his comment, you lowered down and kissed his lips softly.
Once you pulled back, you moved a cookie over his mouth, letting him take a bite.
"You're such a sweetheart." Silence then came for a moment, the cats were playing with Feng's hair while you kept eating cookies, and then, an idea popped in your head. "Can I dry your hair white?"
"No."
Three Divine Sovereigns
i didn’t have anything finished for valentine’s day so have these silly little sketches instead
Happy Mermay my little guppies!
This year for mermay i wanted to do fun or interesting mermaid facts, myths, or types of mermaids from all around the world. So without further ado.
Mermay Day 1: The History Of The First Merpeople
I’ve seen it tossed around that Atargatis is the first mermaid myth, or the first mermaid period. And while her story certainly is old and has the potential. I’ve yet to see a primary source confirming this. In fact we actually don’t seem to know exactly when Atargatis began to be described as a mermaid/half fish.
The oldest source I’m able to find describing her as fishtailed is around 500 BCE. And by that point we’d already had several mermen stories, two other possible candidates for first mermaid, and a very minor greek goddess who may have been a very lovalized epithet of Artemis. The other two candidates being Yemoja who also might not have been fishtailed yet, or the Aboriginal Yawkyawk with no clear source on when belief in these mermaids began. The Epithet is called Eurynome and was known to be a fishtailed River goddess to a city in greece that was worshipped via wooden statue.
The first solid depictions of Mermen all began around the mid 800 BCE. Dagon, Ea/Enki, the Apkallu, Matsya, Nereus, Triton, and potentially Nommo, Fu Xi and Proteus. Those last three again have no clear source for when or if they were depicted as fishtailed but all are very old deities. It’s worth noting Atargatis may have possibly been fishtailed by 800 BCE because a real queen named Semiramis was considered to be a descendant of the goddess. But her supposed divine heritage might have actually been added later and it’s difficult to say if Atargatis was a mermaid at the time of the queens reign or if that was a change that developed later seeing as the recorder of the legend was greek and recoded it around 400 BCE when Atargatis had been a mermaid figure named Derketo to the greeks.
To be clear this means merpeople most likely originated from Sumerian/Babylonian and Greek mythology with the potential to have been developing separately from Hindu, African, Aboriginal, and Chinese mythology. Right now the oldest confirmed is the Dagon and the Apkallu, but Nommo, Matsya, Yemoja, Yawkyawk, and Fu Xi potentially being just as old or older. The first merpeople were middle eastern, Hindu, Chinese, Aboriginal, African, and Greek. So anyone saying ariel can’t be black is legitimately bare minimum 2,500 years too late to be complaining.
