Legacy of Vader - Issue 3 Thoughts

This issue concludes the Tatooine Arc and gives us an interesting look into Kylo Ren's projection of himself and how his image of his grandfather starts to change. In doing so, Kylo Ren will be one step closer to understanding his grandfather's legacy and deciding who he wants to be. The issue is a satisfying end to the first step in reflecting upon Vader's legacy.

Soule's writing, with Ross' artwork, does an amazing job of showing the torture Kylo goes through. It's also interesting to see how he recalls TLJ when he told Rey she's nothing. Now he's wrestling with someone telling him he's nothing and how he needs to be something special. Unfortunately, he tried to do so by emulating Darth Vader.

Given how visions can be the projection of one's inner thoughts, we see Kylo Ren believing that relying on one's power is superior and will grant him the power he needs to live up to Vader's legacy. The irony is that even by the time of Rise of Skywalker, he wants to rule the galaxy with Rey. However, he firmly learns the Dark Side is a lonely path. A sad truth is that one of the major reasons Anakin fell to the Dark Side was to not let Padme die and yet he ended up being alone by the end of his attempts to save Padme.

Kylo Ren once again showcases that while he's no Vader, he is certainly a powerful Dark Side user as he effortlessly destroys every enemy in his path and obliterates any trace of Gardulla's influence on Tatooine. If there’s one thing the Skywalker family share, it’s having scenes of absolutely destroying their opposition.

It is amusing to see how Hux, for all of his hatred for Kylo Ren, at least knows not to doubt him when Kylo Ren is assured of something.

While it is a bit confusing to not see Gardulla's death on-screen, it does fit with how Kylo Ren pledged she wouldn't be a part of his story, with Kylo Ren's final "no" firmly showing he will not obey her as Gardulla's castle is destroyed. I wonder what happened to the rock Force-user.

I'm pretty sure Vaneé is working with the Sith Eternal to help prepare Kylo Ren to become Papa Palps' new servant by teaching him Sith lessons. It'll be interesting to see Vaneé elaborate more on Anakin and Padme's relationship and how their love changed the galaxy forever, including what lesson Vaneé wants to pass on to Kylo Ren.

I can't wait to see Kylo Ren head to Naboo. Based on the last page, I wonder if Naboo fell on hard times in the decades after the Galactic Civil War. I can’t wait to see how Kylo’s journey will fold on Naboo either way!

Time-Traveled Clones Give Anakin a Mental Breakdown

So @purronronner​ suggested the below on discord:

mental time travel au but it’s only clones (definitely Cody and/or Rex, possibly others)

Which we obviously all took and just... ran with. Contributors include Purrs, @the-lunar-system, and @atagotiak.

Initial brainstorming was just us trying to figure out how many clones did the mental travel, from when, etc. - Ended up deciding on 'significantly post-O66' and 'some but not all' - Mostly it's the angle that the only people who have an idea of what’s coming are the ones who aren’t even seen as people by most. THey have very little leverage to work with but they’ve gotta do something.

(I personally like the idea that Boba travels because Jango has to deal with the fact that His Baby Boy is suddenly much more adult and serious and also telling him that the whole Kamino thing is going to Destroy Everything Including Mandalore, And Revenge Against The Jedi Won't Be Worth It, but that idea got scrapped because he's got too much influence via dad.)

Rex and the clones that died when Rex & Ahsoka were escaping 66. Because Rex would probably be very regretful he couldn’t save them. The others would probably be understanding of the situation and even worse some of them would be thankful that he stopped them. - Strategic mass desertion via faked KIA reports as medics smuggle people out to investigate what's trying to kill the Jedi through the clones - Also they can manage a lot by doing surgeries and reprogramming Med droids and stuff. At the very least Palpatine can’t manage such a sudden and decisive victory without subverting the clones. The political angle is probably still a complicated mess but he can’t just snap his fingers and do a genocide, y’know? - IMO at least Fives is definitely on the list of time-travelers.

The Krell Situation is, uh... handled. Quickly. - Sometimes friendly fire just happens, you know? Accidents.

Mass Distrust of Anakin Skywalker - He knows they don't like him but has no idea why. - On the one hand, they loved them some TCW Anakin. On the other hand, look where that takes him...

Anakin keeps feeling like the clones are mourning him while he's standing right there. More than the other Jedi, even! All the Jedi feel vague grief from some of the clones, usually in a way that makes no sense, but the vibe they have around Anakin is a mindfuck. - Some of them want to get away and fast, some of them want to figure out how to fix him, none of them are at all happy with this.

He does one of those somewhat concerning TCW things where Imperial March plays faintly in the background, and while in the first timeline the clones would write it off as him being a little bit angrier than most Jedi (and he never takes it out on them, y’know?), this time they’re reacting… poorly. - They're scared of him this time. - And lbr the clones... while they’re largely good, moral people, have less rigid ethical rules than the Jedi and are more used to thinking of things in terms of us-vs-them as well as the Jedi-know-best conditioning, so they probably wrote off a lot the first time around (and now blame themselves, just a little, for Vader).

They, uh, they maybe get a bit twitchy... and the specific fear a few of "Vader's Fist" feel is so similar to the fear Anakin sensed around slaves in Gardulla's that he starts having flashbacks. - Anakin at one point spirals so deep into a flashback that he mutters something about how "she" is going to eat him and nobody can figure out who the fuck he's talking about, because nobody knows about Gardulla, possibly not even Obi-Wan, since that was TODDLER Anakin and while Watto may have come up, Obi-Wan probably didn't even think Anakin would have remembered toddler-age stuff, so Gardulla was never really discussed. - All anyone knows is that Anakin is fine with Ahsoka, so it's not her, but she's the only person on board using she/her pronouns so far since none of the clones are socially transitioning yet. - (Apparently Gardulla just ate her slaves sometimes? And Anakin had to live with the knowledge that that was a possibility for him? Until he was three? Fucked up, bro.) - (I'm just really invested in AUs where Anakin's 'not going evil' path kicks off in part with a breakdown where he can't keep himself in denial about the slavery element of the clones anymore.)

This would be pretty soon after Return to Tatooine, and Tatooine Three: Electric Boogaloo so Anakin is like... peak slave trauma rn anyway.

Anakin has a breakdown much earlier than in canon, and in precisely the opposite direction, loudly and blatantly enough that the Temple has to ground him for a bit, and even Palpatine can't get that overturned until the medics say so. - Also one of the key points: Anakin doesn’t resent it in the same way. - It’s uh. Less. The “The Jedi are afraid of my power (and Palpatine says that’s why I can’t just do what I want)” and more “the clones are afraid of my power (arguably with good reason)”

This is just back to back: - Mom died because you couldn't save her, on Slave Planet - You slaughtered an entire tribe of Tuskens, including the children, and have been putting a lot of effort into convincing yourself you're not a monster - You got chained up and threatened with public execution via Consumed by Big Thing (and are abruptly reminded of toddlerhood, where you were at risk of being Consumed by Gardulla, a Big Thing) - Clone army, basically slaves, can't think about that too hard or you'll freak out - (Secret marriage, which is stressful but not hitting the slave trauma button.) - You had to save a baby Hutt -- You had to help a slaver Hutt -- ON SLAVE PLANET AGAIN -- WHILE THE HUTT IS THREATENING TO KILL YOU - (Someone just GAVE YOU A CHILD, which is stressful but not hitting the slave trauma button.) - Half the clones treat you like a more impuslive Obi-Wan, and half of them are... scared and wary and you don't know what to do about that - You did something kinda fucked up and now half the slaves clones are fine and the other half feel like they're waiting for you to kill them in your anger - Fuck - Fuck

Desert Twins: part 2

Now, I imagine that at this point, they’re all owned by Gardulla the hutt. Since Shmi got pregnant without her say so, she’s been keeping a close watch on the Skywalker trio. Maybe she assigns Shmi to serving her. So naturally, Shmi is scared for her babies and keeps them far from her as she does her work. She does, occasionally, take time to feed the twins, but she does it when she knows Gardulla is busy: holding court, or paying attention to a different slave.

As they grow older, the twins get less reliant on her and more on each other. Anakin is the more curious of the two, more likely to get in trouble trying to find out what a thing is, or how it works. Perhaps he finds someone willing to teach him mechanics; maybe Shmi teaches him, and Bentu as well; if her children are useful like this, maybe they will not be taken away, or trained as pleasure-slaves. 

Bentu is quieter, and keeps a lookout to make sure Anakin doesn’t get in trouble. She warns him when a depur is near, and maybe she covers for him when he’s in trouble. Initially, she just takes the blame herself. But sometimes, a slaver sees him make trouble, so she tries instead to pull attention, to make sure that the slaver is more interested in punishing her than him. Anakin tries to help Bentu as well, but his help is more direct: taking the blame, helping Shmi patch her up, trying to physically protect her. But they are slave children, so Anakin’s attempted interventions don’t help, and sometimes hurt.

Still, the twins grow close, and are always found near each other. They can sense if the other is in trouble, which they both use to varying degrees of success. Shmi worries about them, because Gardulla owns them but never wanted them, but she worries less when she sees them protect each other. And until the twins turn six, she need never worry.

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

Oof, this is a tough one. I would love to see Your Name in My Teeth as a movie. I think it would be such an interesting dark drama. But I think that Carry Me Home would make the best movie.

I have too many. So I’m going to talk about my active WIPs. 

The Corner of Divinity - The SladeJay omegaverse that I’ve been unintentionally torturing my Jason fans with since like freaking April. I’m so thrilled because it’s almost fucking done! I just have the last fucking scene to write, folks. I just gotta finish the smut. 😂😂😂 It’s coming (ha!) I promise. I don’t wanna give more plot away than I already have but I’m pretty happy with it. 

Indentured Verse - Palpatine’s POV - Guys, this is gonna be so... ow. It’s gonna be  so very dark and... Well, I haven’t really finished writing it yet, obviously, but the way the words wanna go... some of my normal Indentured Verse readers may wanna bow out.  Or not. 😏 Who knows. I’m writing it, ffs, so it’s not like I’m judging.

Kidnapping AU - The SW server knows quite a bit about this. I’m not sure how to make this sound appealing by just outlining the premise. This is why I use bits of the fics themselves as summaries. I’m nearly 19k into what’s likely to be around 50k. And I’m so incredibly excited for it!

40. Write an alternative ending to [insert fic title] (or just the summary of one).

The original lines I’m segueing off of:

“I will give you 100 thousand cho mar for him.”

“A pittance. He is worth much more than that. Regardless, he’s not for sale. Is our other business concluded?”

Anakin’s voice spoke up, low at his side, “Yes, Master.” 

Obi-Wan almost flinched. The intonation was all wrong. Though Anakin had said those same words many times a day, every day since had come to the temple, Obi-Wan had never heard it sound like that. 

He never wanted to hear it again. 

“Then we shall take our leave. Thank you for your hospitality.”

All Obi-Wan wanted to do was get out. Get Anakin out of this horrible place and get him back to the ship. Get him off this planet. 

As quickly as he could without being rude, he bowed to the hutt and turned to leave, watching out of the side of his eye to make sure Anakin was following. 

“I will have that boy,” Gardulla called out, as they were led out of the throne room. 

No, you kriffing won’t, Obi-Wan swore.

The halls were dark as they walked them again, Anakin following those awful steps behind him. It made his skin itch. Obi-Wan wondered if a dust storm was brewing, snuffing the lamps that had lit the path on the way in. Somehow, he didn’t think so. 

The Force screamed around them and he stuttered, his hand tangling in the unfamiliar clothing as he grasped for his saber. Something hurled itself into him and Obi-Wan was thrown to the side. White exploded across his vision as his head cracked against the stone walls of the hallway and a shot rang out, the red light of the blaster flashed in the dark. 

His vision blurred, his eyes betraying him, but he thought he could feel at least six people in the hall. Six people and — Anakin!

Shouting erupted around him. Harsh words he didn’t understand; guttural and low. More Huttese.

Obi-Wan tried to move but a spike of pain shot through his skull. Something settled on his chest, long and flat and heavy, steadily pressingpressingpressing — He couldn’t breathe — he couldn’t — 

Metal clinked in the dark — echoing off the walls — a fatal sounding snap made him flinch. Was he dreaming?

Was he?

Was...

The harsh light of the twin suns beat down upon on his face and Obi-Wan woke with a gasp. His chest burned with an ache he didn’t understand, cramping, coughing, he rolled over onto his side. Agony pierced his brain as he clutched at the sand beneath his hands, searching for purchase against the spasms wracking his chest.

When he could breathe, when he could think, he opened his eyes again. 

A small hide pouch and a note — scratched out in rough Aurebesh. 

“You should have taken the first offer.”

What do you think would have happened to Anakin if Qui-Gon had not asked Obi-Wan to train him?

He’d backto slavery!

Withoutanyone arguing for him, Anakin would’ve been send back to Tattoine to be withhis mother and would probably end up as slave again.

“Nine years old,” Palpatine said when he could. “Surely too old to be trained.”“If the Council shows any sense.”“And what will become of the boy then?”Dooku’s shoulders heaved. “Though no longer a slave, he will probably be sent to rejoin his mother on Tatooine.” [James Luceno’s Darth Plaguei}

Shmi, as aslave, would have no claim to her own son. She wouldn’t be able to provide forhim because Watto wouldn’t allow Anakin to live on his property and survive outhis credits. Plus, nothing would keep Watto from reclaiming Anakin, kidnappinghim and inserting a new chip. It’s not like anyone would care.

But thebiggest threat to Anakin’s freedom was the Hutts. Gardulla wanted him back andJabba was pissed he had lost a bet.

Watto wasmore than willing to sell Anakin, make some money and please Gardulla. He evenhired guns to kill qui-Gon and kidnap Anakin. Qui-Gon, of course, intervened. Butonce Anakin had been return to Tattoine what would keep Watto from tryingagain? If not for greed, than out of spite. He felt cheated by Qui-Gon, so inhis mind it was only a matter of reclaiming stolen property.

SendingAnakin back to his mother (without freeing her and getting them both out ofthat plane) would have been extremely callous.
