The academic world is built on numbness and ritual,
on a quiet agreement that obedience is the same thing as intelligence.
Ego polished until it reflects itself,
tradition reheated and served as truth,
And everyone was told to admire the plating.
They preen their feathers and call it rigor.
They bow to mirrors and call it brilliance.
They shut their eyes to the sky and swear the ceiling is the universe.
Passion, they say, is unprofessional.
But passion is the engine of inquiry
the force that bends curiosity toward meaning.
What they call professionalism is often just fear:
fear of being seen,
fear of being wrong,
fear of needing to change.
Precision, they say, must be bloodless.
But bloodless language does not make thought more accurate
it makes it smaller.
Clarity is treated as rebellion
because clarity exposes how little ceremony is actually needed.
Creativity is labeled a liability,
as if thinking itself were a threat.
As if technical language were allergic to beauty.
As if rigor and imagination were enemies
rather than co-conspirators.
Graduate students are trained not to think, but to perform thinking.
Not to explore, but to imitate.
Not to learn, but to sound learned.
Their job is to copy the shape of knowledge
and pretend they were born knowing what the elders decided decades ago.
This does not build scientists.
It builds birds
ornate, anxious, endlessly grooming,
circling the same branch,
mistaking posture for flight.
But intelligence is not a ritual.
It is not compliance.
It is not the recitation of inherited phrases.
Intelligence is curiosity that refuses to die.
It is precise in meaning.
It is a structure that still allows air to pass through.
It is seeing the sky and refusing to pretend the cage is the horizon.
