Hey gang this weeks #fjmBTSthursday will be a two parter! Part 1 focuses on the B&W portion of the cover (though with 1 spot colour). I start all covers with simple thumbnails in #photoshop. I then create a new layer to flesh out the body and perspective, once I feel happy with the placement I print it out. I light box it onto a #strathmorebristol 11x17 and tighten up the pencils using #colerase blue pencil. The next step is separating foreground/background so I wash out the background using #windsornewtonwatercolor with a #grumbacher #6 brush. This helps me visibly see the separation. I use a #windsornewtonseries7 #2 brush to paint the details of both his face and the building windows. I add a spot of red just cause it looks cool. I contemplated going full traditional colours on the whole thing but I find the scanning and touch up process lack the vibrancy of the real thing. It's easier to make adjustments to digitally coloured pieces should editorial need changes. Anyways stay tuned for part 2 later today where we take a look at the digital colouring process!
