How Are You Caring For Yourself This Holiday Season?
With the holidays here often times there is an increase in social events, activities, school plays, shopping, and of course all those delectable delights. People often stay busy hustling and bustling, sleep is reduced, more time is spent in crowds, and there is a tendency to indulge in all kinds of delicious food and drink. For many this can simply mean gaining a few pounds and enjoying some good cheer. For others a small indulgence can mean their life.
Often times I see where people feel that they have to feast or deprive themselves during this time. Energetically, feasting can be good for the spirit. However, overindulgence can leave a person feeling heavy, tired, and experiencing a whole array of symptoms. On the other hand depriving oneself completely also leaves the spirit feeling unfulfilled, unworthy, and unincluded.
So what is the answer? Harmony, moderation, and interactions.
1) Harmony means indulge in things that are seasonal, especially the atmosphere and environment of the holidays. Focus on just having a good time where you are.
2) Moderation means not only taking smaller portions of things; but pick up a variety of foods. Taking one or two of multiple things will give your tastebuds more satisfaction and often helps you feel as if you have had more food because of the variety of flavors; your mind registers 20 different flavors instead of 5 providing greater satiation and delight. Also multiple things on a plate fills your plate more, helping you to feel as if you have had more than you have.
3) Finally, interact with others. Grab your plate of food and then strike up conversations. Talking will lead you to take longer to get through a plate of food, which keeps you from both overeating and going back multiple times. There are always interesting people to talk with, and many people open up more at parties than other times; allowing you to learn more about them.
Food is not the only area of self-care. Try a nice hot bath by candle-light after being out shopping. Enjoy peaceful moments late at night. Enjoy some hot tea, chai, or cider with cinnamon. These will not only warm you up with seasonal influences but can also boost your immune and energy levels to keep you going and stay healthy.
I have a few things I enjoy - a hot cup of cocoa with unsweetened chocolate (just raw cocoa) and almond milk, seasonally scented candles to bring a soothing aroma around the house, a holiday movie, that moment of silence as the snow starts to fall in the middle of the night.
What do you like to do to care for yourself during the holiday season? What do you enjoy indulging in that you can make work for you? What will you do to take time for the things that you enjoy at this time of year?
