An avenue of Quercus ilex (holm oak, holly oak, evergreen oak) an evergreen, broadleaf tree which is native to the Mediterranean region. It was introduced to Britain in the late 1500s and will develop into a large tree. The upper surface of the leaves are glossy green contrasting with the whitish lower surface, the young foliage and yellow catkins.

Trees. Anyone who spends time walking along the ‘cliffs’ in Westcliff/Southend will have seen the wonderful collection of Holm Oaks, or Quercus ilex, that reside there. These magnificent evergreen trees are often planted in coastal locations due to their tolerance of salt spray, they have a beautifully shaped crown and can grow up to 20 metres tall.
