Day 16: What inspired your WIP? * The War is an accumulation of dreams that have lasted a decade. The early stories that later became The War were usually inspired from other works. There are tiny remnants of those old drafts (so to speak) remaining but they’re few and far between. * It all started with wings. Originally, they were bat-like wings but wings all the same. Essentially, the Slyveshi creature was built before the story existed. The creature turned into people. These people gained lives. These lives became a story. ❤️✨What inspired you to cosplay for the first time?”✨❤️ • It was 2011, working retail right out of college and feeling super down about having NO creative outlet, much less a career after getting a BFA degree in art. I discovered cosplay at a time I think I needed it the most. My friends @taylorwiffed and @nicichan were my coworkers at Apple and they mentioned that I should go check out Phoenix Comicon (@phoenixfanfusion) that coming Memorial Day weekend. So I bought a one day ticket and pretty much had my mind blown. How I hadn’t been exposed to this culture earlier was weird considering the crowds I ran in, but there it was in all of its nerdy fandom glory and I literally felt like I was shining that weekend. I went to a dozen panels that day, including Story Time with @itswilwheaton (I miss those 😭) and I spent all day mesmerized by all the people in costume. It wasn’t that popular yet, even as recently as 10 years ago, so maybe only a 5th of the crowd was in cosplay. I remember being so excited and inspired. Dressing up in costume wasn’t that foreign to me, as my mom always made me costumes growing up and I was in theater. This time, however, I wanted to create something for myself that I could wear to express my fandoms, and fulfill the creative emptiness I was feeling. • So it began... • Thank you Taylor and Denise for changing my life in a way I never thanked you for. Today marks five years since I made my first mourning piece, a white topaz ring with fur for my friend Hilary who’s beloved dog Ilse had died. I’d just learned some silversmithing basics from my neighbor and offered to make something for Hilary after she posted about being disappointed by the enormous cost of cremation diamonds.
