“You’re such a handsome boy.” Lily smiled, kissing little Harry’s head and fixing his shirt over his belly, sitting criss-cross next to James.
Harry was dressed up for Halloween that night, as a little bumblebee. Black and yellow striped shirt and a black headband with antennas.
James was a lady bug, his cheap red cotton shirt having black, sharpied in spots. And his wonderful Lily was a butterfly, wearing a blue blouse, fairy wings and antennas. Her red hair was curled and had flowers in it.
Harry squealed and giggled, clutching his mama’s hair when there was a knock on the door.
James grinned, “must be the trick or treater’s, they’re early tonight.” He said, getting up and grabbing the candy bowl.
He opened the door and almost dropped it to the ground, clutching it. “Trick or.. Peter.” He whispered, staring at him and the figure that had his hand on his shoulder.
“Pete.. what are you..” James’s glance darted between Peter’s eyes and his shoulder where a thin, pale hand rested, digging crescents beneath the black cloak.
Peter just stared, he didn’t say anything at all. He looked unforgiving.. but most of all, scared.
James’s face grew pale and tears formed in his eyes.. but he would protect his family with his life.
James turned to his wife, “Lily! Take Harry and run! It’s him- he’s here!” He stumbled back and grabbed his wand from his pocket, dropping the candy bowl, “I’ll hold them off.”
Then there was a flash of green and Lily ran for her little boy’s life, tears in her eyes and trying to soothe her son. Little Harry who hadn’t done a thing to anyone.
