Me, an intellectual I certainly am: Every summer, I'm visiting my Christian side of family for a month straight. They're reading Bible with me, we're all praying before dinner and before going to sleep, they make me go to church and they try to talk with me about my sins. Bioshockful

On Tuesday’s class we delved into Biochock’s narrative devices

We covered how Bioshock’s world conveyed a once utopia gone to hell through the effects that it used, the soundtrack and scripted events.  It would use an orchestral soundtrack to convey a hopeless and eery environment. It made excellent use of dynamic lighting and shadows to set the mood of Rapture and the particle effects only served to enhance this too. The art deco artstyle was also done extremely well and fit the themes of the game. The voice acting is also top notch. Particularly within Andrew Ryan himself, as he spouts the ideals of free enterprise and individualism (i do too, but not in an extreme egoist fashion), being influenced by Ayn Rand’s objectivism and future of Rapture itself. In Bio 2 however. Sofia lamb took a complete opposite direction in ideals and preached utilitarian collectivism to achieve a grand utopia. Both games critiqued the ideals of both characters and how extreme egoism and altruism is not the way to go for an ideal society.  The intro itself is one to remember and a good setup to the game. When i first played the game many years ago , i was quite stunned at how such a world was delivered and crafted. It was so amazing as i hadn’t really seen anything like it before. Bioshock is certainly  one of my favourite games of the 7th gen hands down. (Sorry if i didn’t post this sooner, but i’ve had net problems for the last few days)

Our disagreement is not merely political, but a fundamental divide on what it means to live in a society.

But if making sure your fellow citizens can afford to eat, get an education, and go to the doctor isn’t enough of a reason to fund those things, I have nothing left to say to you. I can’t debate someone into caring about what happens to their fellow human beings. The fact that such detached cruelty is so normalized in a certain party’s political discourse is at once infuriating and terrifying. The “I’ve got mine, so screw you,” attitude has been oozing from the American right wing for decades, but this gleeful exuberance in pushing legislation that will immediately hurt the most vulnerable among us is chilling.
