ELIZA AND HER MONSTERS by @chessiezappia which was the FIRST COPY she got from her publisher and she gave it to me??? Like. I don’t even know. • • • 2. MADE YOU UP, also by @chessiezappia, because I adore her and have read everything she’s ever written, published or not. (Tbh the unpublished stuff is my favorite stuff, y’all just wait.) • • • 3. OATHBRINGER by @brandsanderson in which I MADE HIM APOLOGIZE for killing a specific character, and then he pulled a #sorrynotsorry on me. (Also, that was my first Stormlight Beta Read for him so he put a smiley next to my name in the acknowledgements ☺️) • • • 4. A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC by @veschwab, which was the first book of hers I ever picked up. I asked her to sign a random page instead of the front, and she added in a quote from earlier in the book. I’m pretty sure that scene was the first thing she imagined when ADSOM came into being, and it makes my heart so happy that she signed it on that page ❤️ • • • 5. THE RITHMATIST by @brandsanderson, which I had him sign on a random page and he added a little quote from the book. This is my FAVORITE Sanderson book because of the magic system and the final “battle” scene. #igwritersoct Day 19: Notebooks. These are just what I had within reach. One is completely full. Four of them are partially full. Two have just a few pages filled so far. But every single one has words in it. Words of brainstorming, outlining, worldbuilding, conference notes, class notes to teach, prose practice... and all those things are mixed together in multiple notebooks. Because inevitably, when I need a specific one, I can’t find it. So I use a different one, and then notes get mixed up and crossed over and nothing makes sense anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oh well. For #igwritersoct day 17, Writer Secrets, I’ve thought for a while about some super secret tidbit that I could share. But after seven years of writing and studying the craft and business I’ve come to realize something: There are no secrets. There’s no special formula, there’s no “correct” path to success. If you have a question about something, there are dozens of people you can ask to get brilliant advice. As long as you’re a decent, compassionate person who pays attention and is willing to make mistakes and listen and learn, you’ll be alright. Day 16 of #igwritersoct is “Major Writing Goals” so I’m doing two lists here... one of actual achievable goals that I have control over (so many stories I want to write), and a second list of dreams that I will work toward and would love to see happen one day. I think it’s important to know the difference between things we can control and things we can’t. I’d love to be a NYT Bestseller some day, I’d love to visit schools with my books and teach writing classes and travel and tour to visit fans all over the world. But I also accept that the only thing fully within my power, is what I write. My job is to create stories people love.
