for me, firewalls full of graffiti are part and parcel of urban centres. even if the walls are now disappearing under insulation or, as here, will soon be obstructed, because more and more gaps are disappearing that were torn by past eras.  every picture is also always a document against disappearance.

gothic dream I

since its rebuilding after the war, the church's flat roof design makes it look as if it had been beamed straight from england. and it also stands out in the surroundings because it is surrounded almost exclusively by plain post-war buildings. an architectural pearl in a simple setting.

gothic dream II

no matter what time of day i pass the agneskirche, i discover new details and perspectives. the church has its very own charisma for me, just as it forms the centre of the neighbourhood.

the bakery that no longer exists. only the barrel lettering still bears witness to what used to be. maybe a new one will move in? one where the dough is allowed to rest and goes into the oven on the spot, the rolls crack leg in and the bread makes you full instead of being full of air. yes, that would be fine.

montagehalle

i grew up with the sight of the transformer factory, and every time i visit dresden i see the hall first from afar and then from close by, and somehow i also know this sign of permanence because i am back in my old neighbourhood. the hall has always been a special building for me. powerful but still filigree thanks to the design of the window strips and supporting struts.

overbeckstraße // dresden übigau

these buildings in dresden übigau used to belong to the vet transformatoren- und röntgenwerk (tur) "hermann matern". designed in a simple post-war modern style, the main material is brick in different shades of red. especially at sunrise and sunset, the walls glow in beautiful warm tones. after renovation and conversion, the old rooms have been used for a variety of purposes, which can certainly be described as successful preservation.

merheimer platz // köln nippes

"pittermänchen gut gekühlt" the most important products of the former beverage trade are still on the wall as logos. and how could it be otherwise in cologne, they are primarily kölsch beer brands. 

how long the buildings will stand there remains to be seen, the area is supposed to be renaturalised as it actually belongs to the adjacent park, so it will be interesting to see what the result will look like.
