I wish I could have watched the Artemis II landing. Like in person, at the beach, here in San Diego. How cool would it be to see something that's a part of space history?! I know so many people went to the beach to see what they could get a glimpse of. There were a ton of watch parties both held individually and by organizations that offered tickets for purchase. The San Diego Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park and the Fleet Science Center were two of those. There were news articles from this morning that discussed the possibility of hearing of sonic boom. This a quote from a local news station:
"On Thursday afternoon, officials with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said a sonic boom could potentially be felt and heard throughout Southern California between 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. PST.
The USGS encourages anyone who thinks they might have heard or felt a sonic boom to fill out its “Did You Feel It” survey. This crowd sourcing tool typically collects eyewitness reports from people who feel earthquakes. It uses online responses to map shaking intensity, damage extent and human experience. In this special case, the USGS will map out sonic boom accounts."
This same article said it was less likely to happen here than over the ocean because it they will re-enter the earth's atmosphere at approximately 2000 miles away and just southeast of Hawaii. It's been 4 hrs since it landed and I have not heard anything resembling a sonic boom, lol.
I'm so glad NASA chose now to make this 10 day trip to the moon and back. The world needed this.
