Listen up I have a story to tell!
So my college has finally begun and I have taken French as one of my compulsory languages (not in the US). I'm not completely fluent but I do understand some of it, and obviously I would love to speak the language perfectly someday.
The teacher, a sweet lady in her 70's, with her career older than all of our parents, started by having small conversations which are easy to carry on for now, and then from our names, to where we live, she takes the conversation to illness and injuries, asking us if we have any and taught us how to respond to that.
Next she comes to the heart and she says (in french; mind you, I'm not fluent, so what she said vs what I understood was completely different), "Does anyone have any heartache?" as in a breakup or a relationship strain (what I understood: "Does anyone have any heart diseases?") So naturally I say, "Personne" because c'mon what 18 year old will have a heart disease over here, I knew most of the people and they're all healthy.
After her repeating the question a couple times, everyone started giggling, even though I didn't understand.
Next she says, "What are the remedies for that heartache"
I thought she meant what do you do in case of a serious heart condition, and like a fool I said "Bypass surgery"
For the next fifteen minutes, I'm laughing internally about how she was talking about heartache and "did your boyfriend not call you? or get any chocolates for you or any flowers? No?" and I was piping up with all sorts of medical procedures to fix the heart, literally.
and that's how I know I'm a true ace.
