Izzy thoughts that probably get way too fucking personal
I’m not an Izzy apologist nor do I like him as a person because he reminds me of who I used to be, and I hate who I was. I too used to be an anxious confused asshole and it’s like a stain on my life. When Con said “He wants to be better, he really does, he just doesn’t know how”, it punched me in the stomach /pos.
But confusingly I also didn’t like him because I see more parts of myself in Ed. I know what it’s like to be trans grow in my identity and finally start to be happy only for someone close to not leave. Me. The. Fuck. Alone. To act like I’m killing the person they knew so that I can exist, and harass me about it constantly.
Also the stuff Izzy puts Ed through IS really that fucking bad. I’m sorry, it just is. You can deflect this back and go “Ed too!”, but acknowledging Ed’s wrongs should not absolve Izzy of his. I’m at a point now where I just sigh very tiredly when I see statements like “Izzy’s crime was yelling at Ed”because it just… idk, betrays a lack of understanding to me? most of Izzy’s wrongs against Ed are things that aren’t easy to notice unless they’ve happened to you in some form. (Case and point, there’s a lot of people who can tell you “just yelling” or even talking can be very psychologically damaging, see previous paragraph.)
There’s also the fact that Izzy tried to have Stede killed in front of Ed twice. I’ve seen almost everyone ignore this in some way, either not thinking about it what so ever or brushing it off as no big deal because, in the words of Edward also-has-major-faults Teach, “they’re pirates”. However I think many are forgetting an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT part of media analysis, and that’s framing.
These scenes are filmed and acted in such a way that suggests genuine gravity and distress. There’s a big difference between the narrative flippancy of Izzy mentioning that many of Ed’s old crew died on the Spanish ship, or Spanish Jackie’s grief over her favorite husband, and the genuine weight given to Ed’s fear and desperation. Good film makers know how to show you what’s actually meant to be taken seriously in genres where that isn’t always a given.
The framing is trying to tell you that watching someone you love almost die in front of you is fucking terrifying, and it is. It really is. It’s a horrific situation to be placed in, and I’m willing to be bet most people saying Izzy “just yelled” at Ed haven’t really experienced it or something similar.
