It took me a month but I finished season 3 of Black Sails!!! Not that in any way it was bad, but I've been having a hard time and this show has offered me the little comfort I can have, so I both want to make it last, and my brain isn't letting me consume too much for too long
But I'm not here to talk about myself, but about this show, and let's start with I miss Miranda so much!!!! The visions were beautifully done, I love how the show explores the weight of grief, how it can become part of you and consume you - I think the team of grief is a big reason why the show has come to help me so much. Also can I also say the show has the most terrifying portrayal of Death that I've seen
Also let's talk about John Silver!!! I LOVE him so much now (not close to faves but good), he's so good!!! Both with his looks - he really looks very attractive with the beard and hair - but also the darkness in him and his scenes and power are just something else!!! He and Madi (she's definitely a fave) are adorable and I LOVE them so much and I'm so excited for them to kiss in s4 and to see them develop, because I know it will be beautiful. Then also the tension between Flint and Silver - the way they become full on partners, they're next to each other, they're each other's person - their relationship is just so GOOD!!!!
MADI!!!! She's incredible!!! She and her mom are incredible!!! I LOVE the power they hold in the Maroon Camp, how they're listened to, but also how Madi wants more, how she finds in Flint and Silver an alternative, the chance for the world to see her, for her to have freedom. I LOVE their fight against civilization!!! And I LOVE to see the motives from her and James' motives as well - the contrast between them but align their fight
Also knowing Billy Bones is gonna go dark in s4, the end of season 3 for him is absolutely incredible!!! I LOVE the power of words and image coming to play, and him becoming a pamphlet maker!!!
Now I also really missed Anne and Max this season... to see them apart, but also Max's worry and trying to keep her safe. And also always knowing that keeping Jack safe is part of keeping Anne safe - these three keep being amazing and so complicated between them!!!
Still on Max, her and Eleanor back in the place, I was reminded of how good they are!!! That's such an interesting dynamic and I love how the show didn't forget even after keeping them apart for most of s2... And then the pain of Eleanor and Charles as well - his death was so well done, and I LOVE how the show doesn't shy away from the love Jack Rackman, Anne Bonny and Blackbeard have for him - to see them fight for him (just like James does for Thomas and Miranda!!!) - this show and its parallels!!!!
Can I also shout out Idelle and Featherstone?!! I could take them or leave them before, but now, I freaking love them so much!!!! I LOVE their power, and how they deal behind the scenes, and this strange partnership they've found!!! They're extraordinary!!!!
Truly this show is incredible!!! It's beautiful first of all, beautiful places and beautiful action pieces. But most important is so character driven, the relationships matter the most, and in such a dark and violent show, love, friendship, family and the desire for a better and more just world still matter so much - they don't only matter but these are the things leading the story (and the darkness itself)
(Also finished season 3 just in time, because my HBO free trial is ending next week. Season 4 is on netflix, so I don't have to worry, I'll take the time to rewatch Miranda scenes once again :) )
