Sea captain Jim McKay travels out west to the sprawling ranch owned by the father of his fiancee Pat Terrell, quickly learning that his proper sailor manners are entirely opposite of what is expected of him on a ranch.

Julie Maragon is a schoolteacher caught in the middle of a blood feud between the Terrells and the Hannasseys, both of whom are desperate to own Julie’s property, the Big Muddy.

Jim and Julie meet as a result of Jim being engaged to Julie’s best friend Pat Terrell, but they soon become allies as they realize that the deadly feud will soon overcome them if they do not act quickly. As Jim is forced to repeatedly prove his honor and Julie fights off the unwanted advances of Buck Hannassey, they develop feelings for one another that they hope will bring peace to the endless fighting.
