Dead Boys’ Cheetah Chrome & Jane Scott, a former Navy Lieutenant and the first major female rock critic in a field mostly dominated by men (she’s actually considered to be the world's first rock critic), here back in Nov. 1978 in a photo published in Cleveland Magazine (source: Cleveland Public Library).

Starting out as a young reporter in the ‘50s, Jane Scott covered everything from pimples to pensions until the moment she was sent to cover the Beatles' first Cleveland performance at Public Hall on September 15, 1964, also travelling to England in 1966 to cover their tour. 

“Once I found rock, I was never interested in anything else”.

Another Christmas come and gone. We threw a party with some close friends to celebrate. I wish we’d had some snow, but Malky says he’s never seen snow this far south. I do miss Newcrest some times...

News from the family, yes. Margie and Akira are expecting their first child! Any day now, apparently. I’m so excited to meet them. Beau and Liberty still live in the Newcrest apartment with their two little ones, Henry and Doris. Liberty says she can hardly buy clothes fast enough with how quickly they grow up. Frank and Lilith only have one little girl, Jane, but they’ve got her a cat to keep her company. Not much news of the rest of the extended Scott Family - good, or bad. Everyone is getting on well.

Punk's Dead Boys rock the Agora: Jane Scott, 1977

Stive Bators bent his 105-pound body into backbends and flipflops, Johnny Blitz kept up a pounding rhythm on the drums, Cheetah Chrome and Jimmy Zero set a smoking pace on their guitars and new player Jeff Magnus slapped the bass. It took the Dead Boys a little longer to get started at the Agora than it had at Spanky's Saturday night, but they soon were at full speed.

"I feel good when I'm dressed up. I suppose that the punk look is exciting to some people. It is different and everyone likes to have variety,” she admitted. -- July 8, 1977

Hey! Idk if you were at the faire this weekend but do you have any idea what “Jane the Fool is a horse” was all about?

Hello!  I was at the Faire today, but I was not present at the birth of the joke.  I thus do not know the details (ha, de-TAILS, geddit, ‘cos she’s a horse), but I know that it started during Boons and Favours. (I never attend Boons and Favours, because it overlaps with the beginning of King’s Court, and I much prefer chanting “Bridget” and seeing Sir Walter freak out than watching small samples of many shows.)

((Of course, if any followers who just happen to have been present at Boons and Favours *pointed glance* feel like enlightening us, I’m rather curious myself.))

Legendary rock music journalist Jane Scott was one of the first women to cover rock music. She was the country’s first music critic for a major daily newspaper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, a job she held for nearly 50 years. Here she’s pictured interviewing Marc Bolan in 1972 when T. Rex was playing the Yorktown Theatre.
