You Weren't Meant to be Human (Andrew Joseph White)
Just finished the book and... yeah. Wow.
This book is weird, gruesome, and oddly enthralling from the first pages. Everything is deeply messed up - the people, the situations, the Hive - and I could feel my stomach tighten on multiple occasions. There are so many different types of horror in this book as well. There's body horror, and psychological horror, and moral horror, etc. AJW does not hold the reader's hand AT ALL. He grabs you by the hair and drags you through it, whether you're ready or not. But he's also kind enough to give you some really good moments where you're left to piece things together yourself, and in those moments, I was just like 'Please tell me I'm gonna be wrong'. Even knowing how dark this book could go... I was still caught off guard at the end. And yet, underneath all the gore, I could still see a narrative and a point being made, so kudos to AJW for that.
I really enjoyed this book, but it is not for the faint of heart.
Overall: Layers of well-written horror, disturbing but compelling, I want to look away but I can't look away.
Quote: “And what is the hive, anyway, except a bunch of sweet-talking bugs?”
