Regulus likes to make decisions. When he makes them, they usually lead to a better end than James' decisions.

But when James asked if the two of them could go to a shelter just to walk one of the dogs there, and Regulus agreed, he had to expect that it would be one of the few decisions he made wrong.

As soon as they entered the shelter, James had only heart eyes for all the dogs there and Regulus regretted his decision.

"We have to keep them!"

"Which one?"

"All of them!"

"James, we can't just walk all the dogs here."

"Our garden is big enough, Reggi"

"Why should we go for a walk in our garden?"

James looks at Regulus pleadingly

"Well...once they've moved in with us..."

"No."

"Why not?"

Regulus looks at his fiancé in shock

"Regulus, give me one reason why not."

"We can't keep 200 dogs in a species-appropriate way."

James is silent for a moment

"Okay, but one for sure"

"No James, we're not getting a dog!"

"Why?"

"Because..... Yes, because we have a cat. You don't know if that will work"

"Padfoot and Kitty have always got on well"

"But Padfoot isn't a normal dog, is he?"

"Look here" James points to a puppy "he's hardly bigger than Kitty"

"We're both working James. The dog can't be alone all day like the cat!"

"Sirius looks after him and I can take him to the office four days out of five!"

"I'm sure my brother has better things to do than look after your dog"

"Firstly," James starts, pulling out his mobile phone, "It's our dog, and secondly," he puts the call with Sirius on speaker, "Hey Prongs, what's up?" You hear the voice from the phone.

"Say, Pads, would you look after our dog? For a few hours every Monday?"

Sirius' voice is 10 octaves higher when he answers: "Oh my God, you have a dog? I need to meet him! How old is he? Can I come round? I look after him every day too! MOONY WE HAVE TO GO TO-" James hangs up and lets Sirius continue shouting.

Regulus looks briefly at the small, actually very cute dog and at that moment Regulus regrets his decision a little less.

Jegulus Prompt: Spring

James looks after the garden every year.

He plants flowers and tills the beds. As soon as the winter frost is over, you'll only find him outside.

Even though Regulus would rather be inside reading his book, he knows that his boy friend would probably bury himself alive.

That's why he's sitting in the garden today, with his book, snuggled up in one of James' Quidditch jumpers, watching James dig.

"Why are you standing in a hole? How deep are you going to do that?"

"Sirius just rang. He and Remus want to hide the whomping willow as an April Fool's joke and confuse Minnie. And I-"

Regulus interrupts him:

"No, we're not going to plant the willow in our garden!"

"But-"

"No, Potter."

But just at that moment, the balcony door behind Regulus opens and his big brother comes into the garden.

"Perfect James! You've already got everything ready, I see!" Sirius puts one arm over Regulus' shoulders and holds out his other hand to James. In it is the whomping willow in miniature size. "Merlin, you're both insane"

"This is the best April Fool's joke Hogwarts has ever had!"

"You two get that willow back to Hogwarts right now before you get detention!"

Sirius rolls his eyes. "We're not at Hogwarts anymore, baby brother. McGonagall can't give us detention any more."

"Yes, but I'm still there for three months. And if I get detention, I swear to Merlin and Morgana you'll be there too!"

James climbs out of the hole and goes to his friend. He puts his arms over Regu's shoulders and gives him a big smooch on the nose.

"I'm in the garden every spring. One more plant won't make any difference. She might not even notice!"

Unfortunately, an owl, which they have seen often enough next to McGonagall in the Great Hall, flies over their heads at that moment.

It is carrying a bright red envelope.

Fortunately, the howler does not hoot, but the calm voice of Professor McGonagall is heard.

"Black, Potter, if the whomping willow is not back within two hours, you will get detention. Believe me, I'm going to make it work. Mr Regulus Black, please inform Mr Lupin. My information is that he is in a bookshop with your brother's credit card. Good distraction. Happy Easter."

The letter self-destructs, leaving three shocked young men in the garden.

Nevertheless, you can still hear the professor's grin in the letter.

Tw: Bad decisions were made. (Spoiler in #)

They're lying together in the Room of Requirement. It's a small room now. Just big enough for a Bed.

The first night back in hogwarts, obviously they have to see each other.

But Regulus is different.

Somehow different from before the Summer holidays.

"What's going on, Love?" James brushes a few strands of Regulus' hair behind one of his ears, which had fallen into his face when he had laid his head on James' chest.

"You will hate me"

James freezes.

"What happend?"

Regulus buries his face in James neck, but he can instantly hear his sobs.

"They got me."

James understands in an instant.

He grabs Regulus Wrist and sees the dark mark.

Pitch Black and big on his lover's arm.

"I must obey him now. We can't see each other again, Jamie"

James kisses his hair, and strokes soothingly over the new tattoo. "No, Love. We will be together forever, remember?"

"But I can't follow you. I can't love you. We're in different teams now, James." Regulus tries to get up, but James strong arms are just pulling him closer.

"Nothing will separate us, Reggi."

"We have no choice, James! I-I have to follow him, and you have to fight against him and-"

"Who says that?" James interrupts.

"What do you mean?"

"Who says I have to fight against him? I'm sure he is willing to make me one of them"

"Potter, you can't just be one of them!"

"But then I can still be with you, don't I?"

"Don't do this, James"

"I love you. I'll do anything for you."

"You have to kill my brother, and Lily, and-"

"Can I keep you?"

"-You can keep me."

"Then let's fight against them. They trust me, so it's not a big deal. Do we need a plan?"

"We...we have to wait and see what the dark lord wants."

"Okay, so we still have time?"

"We have time, James. It probably won't start for a few weeks."

"So let's have some fun, before we have to kill Sirius."

"Are you sure you want this?"

"I'm sure I want you. I'll do anything to keep you, my Love."

Less than a week later, James has his new tattoo and he and Regulus are the new leaders of the Death Eaters. But not much later, he finds one of his best friends at his other side again.

"Oh, Hey Pete!" James says.

It took 3 days of a continuous unusual and silent James.

26 times asking what was wrong.

12 self-esteem dramas.

At least 4 secret phone calls from James.

And 1 morning of waking up alone.

James came back into the room half an hour after regulus woke up.

At home this wouldn't be a rarity because James always goes running in the morning. But on holiday he goes swimming. And at the moment he is absolutely dry.

The day passes, Regulus tries to suppress his worst fears.

And after dinner, the two of them walk along the beach.

Hand in hand, they walk side by side until James suddenly stops.

"Regulus?"

"Potter?"

"Sooo..."

James turns to his boyfriend and takes hold of his other hand.

He starts talking, his voice trembling, and Regulus knows the time has come.

This is going to change everything.

Only he doesn't know yet that it will be for the better.

"So... I've had a little... dilemma in the last few days."

"Oh, and now you suddenly think it's the right time to talk about it?"

James looks puzzled for a moment, but then he has his typical cheeky grin on his face

"Now is the perfect time, love."

Regulus rolls his eyes but looks at James.

"So..."

"James I swear to bloody God, stop saying 'so' and get to the point!"

"Yeah, right, the point. Ehm... I...we've been together for a while now, and... I thought it was time we maybe..." James clears his throat and collects himself for a second. He closes his eyes for a moment and then looks deeply at Regulus. "I love you. I really do. I'm so deeply in love with you. I want to be with you forever and..." He lets go of regulus' hand, reaches into his trouser pocket and kneels down on one knee, "I want more than anything to finally have you as my husband." He shows regulus a ring. Not spectacular, on the contrary, it's a £10 ring from the hotel souvenir shop. But Regulus couldn't care less at the moment. He thought James was breaking up with him.

And ... and now this?

"You stupid arse! I was so scared! I thought that was it! You make such a fuss and and....and then this?"

But then Regulus starts to laugh, realises what situation he's in. His boyfriend of 5 years proposes to him, and he yells at him in response. So he logically starts laughing. "I hate you so much. But I love you even more!" He holds out his hand to James, it shakes. "Go on, get on with your schmaltzy stuff!"

James' panicked expression disappears and he smiles.

"Do you want to m-"

"Yes yes yes yes yes, go on!"

So James puts the ring on him and they both sit on the beach and talk for a long time.

Apparently Regulus' fiancé is just a forgetful klutz, so Regulus has to keep ensuring him that the £10 souvenir ring is okay too, and James ensures Regulus that he's never for a moment in his life thought about ever breaking up.
