The club is pulsating with the kind of energy you can only find on a weekend night in the queer scene in LA, a sea of bodies on the dancefloor, moving in waves, grooving to the music thumping from the overhead speakers. It’s an oldies night, DJ SAZ playing hit after hit from two, even three decades ago, reviving the unbeatable pop scene of the late 90’s and early 00’s. Josh is having the time of his life. He’s downed four cocktails and paid for none of them, and while his prospective suitors were all undeniably attractive, he’s dancing with none other than Evan Buckley tonight.
It’s taken him a good hour to come out of his shell which surprised Josh. He’d heard all about the probationary firefighter who stole a ladder truck and hooked up with a caller on the roof of her building — one thing about dispatchers is that they love to gossip, and word got around. That’s not the man who showed up at his door tonight, dressed as if he was going to the farmer’s market. Josh had taken one look at him and pulled him in, got him out of the denim button-up and into a too-tight V-neck that showed off his arms and his pecs and just a little sneak peek of chest hair. Buck had the sense to wear a pair of black jeans, at the very least. Josh ran his hand through Buck’s hair, messing it up just a little, and told him everyone’s gonna want a piece of him tonight, grinning at the way Buck’s cheeks flooded with colour at the compliment.
Buck had turned down three people who were brave enough to come up to him and ask him to dance, and there were several other men openly leering at him as he waded through the crowd, holding Josh’s hand so as not to lose him as they made their way to the bar. He’d stayed close to Josh and sipped his drink and watched the rest of the club-goers, leaning over to speak close to Josh’s ear every now and then so he’d be heard over the music. It occurred to Josh, at some point, to let him know that people would assume the two of them were there together.
Buck looked thoughtful for a second. “Would that be so bad?”
“No,” Josh couldn’t help but grin. “No, it wouldn’t.”
