I know outside my circle of fandom I’ve created Katthias is considered a bit of a crack ship which kind of surprises me because that’s the only ship besides Kazper that I started shipping/saw only based on book content and not seeing content in fandom and going “oh cool! I’ll ship that!” sjbdbdbdbdddbdbqwjeb like several times throughout the books I’d be reading their interactions and I’d be like “🏳️‍🌈⁉️🤨” unironically, I feel like they’re are a lot of parallels between how Matthias treats Kaz and how he treats Nina. (in soc, when they start getting along for real again, there’s far less obviously lol) obviously I think helnik is the objectively more interesting ship because of the genuine ideology clash but I think Katthias also has a really interesting dynamic

My sexuality headcanons for both of them:

I strongly resent that people consider Matthias "the token straight crow". That guy is so fucking pansexual it makes my gums bleed. He is so soft on Wylan, he's got eyes and can see that Jesper is fucking hot, and the chemistry between him and Kaz is just too fucking sus to NOT be fruity. So I think Matthias is pan - pan specifically because I feel like he's the kind of guy to fall in love with someone's soul first and then stumble upon all the physical attributes he loves about that person afterwards (do NOT be fooled though Matthias Helvar is still def a BOOB lover okay he's still just a man). Oh, and I think Kaz is demisexual.

2. Who fell first?

Kaz fell harder, but Matthias fell first - when they locked eyes in Hellgate Matthias was cursed I mean 'blessed' with an instant something burning between them

3. What did their first date look like? (unless canon has showed that)

Kaz took Matthias horseback riding out in the wide bluffs of Ketterdam's moors, and when he realized Matthias had never seen a horse before he walked his plans back a bit and gently showed Matthias everything about how to ride and bond with horses. It quickly becomes their 'thing', and they ride together often.

4. What does their life look like together today? (unless they aren't alive this year)

Imma be really honest if you want to know what I think Kaztthias's canon lives are like read Lace Revenge and if you don't want to die inside read literally anything else I've written.

5. Do you think they'll have any kids, or are they child free?

This is tricky, because unless this is my omegaverse au of them I feel like saying they'd adopt is an easy out - and one that I don't necessarily think fits them fully. I feel like these two characters will never feel truly safe or moreso truly worthy of fully taking on children of their own (given how much guilt they both carry), but they would certainly open a school/protect the urchins of the Ketterdam streets. Like, they're not anti-kids by any means, they are BUILT to protect those who can't protect themselves imo, but I also don't think either of them are super eager to have kids outside of like a polycrows setting. Matthias def has a breeding kink though which Kaz is very much into.

6. Do you think they'll have any pets?

OH BROTHER DO THEY HAVE PETSSSSS yes of course they do Matthias is bringing home so many strays they might as well open a zoo (hey wait aren't I brewing up an au about exactly that ..... hehehehe ... )

7. What do they wear to a pride parade?

Kaz is somehow dressed up in a killer cunty all black sheer ensemble that looks just as dangerous as it does hot but does not reveal an inch of bare skin. Matthias is just in a "I'm Bi" tank top and jorts because he's a dork. Matty is very happy to just hold Kaz's hand and follow along to whatever Jesper is forcing them all to do for the parade.

8. What did their first kiss look like (if canon has not shown that)

There are two ways I feel like the first Kaztthias kiss could happen - the romantic way, and the feral way. I'll start with the romantic way, where I feel like in a universe where Kaz and Matthias have time to come to understand each other Kaz would (much like he does in canon with the Crows) start to initiate touch contact slowly as he tests if he can overcome his phobia. While he would obviously still include the other Crows in this (because platonic touch is something just as intimate and valid as romantic touch) I feel like Matthias has such a stillness and gentleness to him that it could keep Kaz buoyed in even the fiercest of storms. I feel like Kaz would start to reach for Matthias just because he begins to trust that the big guy will always be there, always one step behind him, always watching and ready. I feel like soon Kaz would start to get greedy (because he is such a lonely, touch-starved boy), and start to want more than just holding a hand or brief shoulder nudges, and that's when he'd snap and just kiss Matthias right on the lips. The feral way is they would go from fist fighting to passionately making out, which feels more canon to me.

Jesper knocked his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. “Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost”.

Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias’ ghost to kick your ghost’s ass”.

“My ghost won’t associate with your ghost,” Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.

11. How long did it take for them to get together?

It depends on which au you're asking about in my opinion, but both of these guys are self-loathing guilt ridden devastated boys who don't know how to let themselves have nice things, so them getting officially "together" takes waaaaayyyyy too long in Wylan's opinion (it was so fucking obvious they had feelings for each other this whole time!!!)

"I. Should. Let. You. Die,” Matthias muttered in time with his compressions.

Matthias came out to Nina first and knew deep down he was queer first, but Kaz was out to the wider public before Matthias was.

Doesn't exist these books are gospel to me. We don't talk about what happens to Matthias in CK.

15. Who was the first person to find out that they're dating?

Inej. She knows literally everything. No secrets hide from her.

16. Is there any person they never told that they're dating?

I guess Jarl Brum? I feel like Matthias doesn't like thinking about it for too long. Kaz offered to send him a letter, but when Matthias read all the things Kaz intended to say to Brum he decided it might be best to let the man live in ignorance. Kaz could have quite a scathing tongue when he wanted to, and he definitely isn't Brum's biggest fan. He is Matthias's biggest fan though, as the unsent letter clearly shows.

17. When did they first meet? (if canon has not showed that)

They technically first meet in Hellgate when they spring Matthias out, but rereading the books I realized Kaz tells Nina he was watching over Matthias for longer and ensuring that Matthias was alive, so Kaz might have lingered as a face in the crowd before they actually met properly.

18. Who is better at cooking?

Kaz. Matthias has a white boy's taste-buds and incredibly low standards given that as a survivalist he's most likely had to eat hard salt beef and raw/under-cooked fish for long stretches of time. Anything more than that is already a winner in Matthias's eyes. Plus even though I headcanon that Kaz can't smell/his nose doesn't work right, I feel like he'd go out of his way to teach himself how to cook precisely to spoil Matthias rotten with delicious foods.

19. Who is the most likely to get drunk?

Kaz. By the time they're dating Matthias is built like a tank and holds his liquor like a champ despite not drinking often. I mean we know Kaz is by no means a sloppy drunk (especially in public), when he's alone with the Crows and can get properly sloshed he becomes a giggly mess.

20. Where in the world would they travel together?

They'd travel the world in it's entirely, if only because Kaz is gathering information for his schemes and not totally enamored with how Matthias lights up each time they see new sights and try new things.

21. Which one is more likely to snore when they sleep?

Matthias. Kaz swears he shakes the entire Slat with the force of his snores, but Matthias thinks he's exaggerating.

Rottie confirms Kaz is not exaggerating, though. Matthias has a strong set of lungs.

Been seeing ppl on Pinterest being weird about the concept of multishipping and non canon ships so here’s my thoughts on a bunch of non canon SOC ships (if you want my thoughts on one I haven’t mentioned just lmk and I’ll add on)

Polycrows: a classic. Love the dynamic of a bunch of traumatized people finding love (platonic and romantic) and comfort with each other

Ninej: my girlssss I love them. I fully believe they had crushes on each other at some point regardless of whether or not they vocalized/acted upon it

Kazper: as someone who has fallen in love with their close friends way too many times, I LOVE unrequited Kazper, but I really enjoy all iterations of them, both platonic and romantic. Their dynamic is just so interesting

Kuwylan: “polyamory could fix them” yeah I agree 100% but I think whatever’s going on with them currently is a thousand times funnier

Kaztthias: this is the ship I’ve seen ppl crashing out about which ??? I honestly don’t spend a ton of time thinking about them but I definitely see the appeal. Soc chapter 29?? Sooo much interesting stuff there idk that one just stands out to me for them

Wylan x Matthias: I don’t have a ton of rarepairs across my fandoms but this is definitely one of mine. I don’t even know if there’s really an official ship name for them? Idk I never see content abt them and I think it’s not a pairing that gets a lot of attention but they’re my 2 favs and I think their dynamic has a ton of potential both platonically and romantically. This is mostly just vibes but I love them

Those are the ones I think about the most but I love giving opinions if you want to ask about other ships! Anyway remember that fandom was built on non canon shipping and even though I love love love the canon ships it’s okay to have fun sometimes!!
