Imagine that Thorin died in the Battle of the five armies but Fili and Kili survived. Imagine that Fili then became the new king. He wouldn't be a happy king for a long while, having always followed Thorin, his king, having thought he could spend many happy years in Erebor as a prince before eventually having to take the throne.

And now he had to take all that responsibility while the person he always looked up to lay dead beneath the mountain.

i think he’d do pretty okay in general, esp with the rebuilding of erebor phase, and he’d be a pretty fair king, mostly cheerful and lenient but not afraid to dole out justice where there should be, because as much as he and kili were goofs, they learned discipline, and the importance of reward and consequence, and he would be a fool king if he didn’t apply all that

i think he probably WOULD take a consort romantically, i mean, there would be too much for him to be sad about, so if someone could make him happy, he probably wouldn’t turn his back on her/him. he would definitely feel the need to produce an heir, and i think he might stop at 2 children.

i think he’d always feel some sort of insecurity owing to the thought or the knowledge that he will probably never be the king that his uncle could have been and the king that his uncle would want him to be, and that could lead to his downfall. if thorin had his pride, kili might have had his recklessness, fili would have this. i always kind of like to think that thorin, fili and kili found strength and support in each other, and were strongest and most skilled when they were with each other, fighting for each other and all that, so without those pillars, fili could start to crumble, whether or not he feels it if and when it starts.

i think he’d definitely be prone to the gold-sickness, already being made vulnerable by his private insecurities. i kind of think gold in general has the same kind of effect on that line that the one ring has on anybody it meets, only this is more single-targeted, if that makes sense. so anytime fili is feeling particularly weak, he feels the pull of the gold a little stronger.

whether or not he succumbs to the gold-sickness is a completely different story. on the one hand, it’s totally possible, considering that before he takes an heir, he’s the last of that line, which could very potentially make the sickness even worse. on the other hand, i wouldn’t want him to fall to it, like he’d use his great grandfather and his grandfather and his uncle as the very reasons he has to fight against it. like his mantra would be “they would want me to fight against it, they would want me to not let it take me as it took them,” instead of “i don’t want to be like them.” i think there’s a world of difference there.

he’d probably insist that bilbo stay on in erebor for a while, would probably value his advice almost above everyone else’s. the filibo shipper in me would want more than that, obvs, but yeah, there you go. bilbo would probably stay only until he was sure fili could manage on his own, and fili would probably send him on his way with enough treasure to feed all of the shire for 200 years or sth. he’d probably even bestow some sort of royal title on bilbo, like an honorary knighthood or something equal to it.
