I'm pretty sure that Sleeping Beauty is the only Disney movie where two kings get drunk discussing the futures of their children and one begins to attack the other with a large fish. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I want to see EVERY movie with that particular combination.

after watching "Maleficent" for the first time, i went back and watched the original "Sleeping Beauty" from the 1950s... as a kid, i thought it was great (but not my favorite Disney movie). now, i can see why Disney decided to reboot the Sleeping Beauty franchise.

Aurora and Philip hardly have any screen time and/or dialogue. the fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather) have way more screen time than either the princess or the prince -- who should be the two main characters in the whole story. there are various long sequences with no dialogue -- like when the fairies are trying to infiltrate Maleficent's castle, or taking Aurora back to the palace.

the animation, i think, was kinda rough. even by 1950s standards, i think it looks awful. lady and the tramp -- which came out four years before SB has much better animation. everything feels so flat and straight. there's few curves or round shapes, it seems like.

plus, there's like three songs in the whole movie. i realize that they can't break out into musical numbers every five minutes -- nor would i want them to. but, either they should have enough songs to fill a whole movie (so maybe 7-8 musical numbers to fill a 1.5-hour long movie) or just background music. there shouldn't be a weird 'in between' area where there's two or three random musical numbers in an otherwise musical-less movie.

i honestly don't know why or how my parents put up with me watching that movie. it's pretty horrible, even by 1950s Disney standards.
