Search For Safety
Summary: Klaus can’t stand Y/N until he finds her protecting Hope with her life. From then on, he can’t find it in him to hate her.
To keep Hope safe, everyone had been taking it in turns to stay at the safe house with her. They would do in pairs, to ensure someone was always in the house if the other needed to do something or get something, such as diapers and baby formula.
Klaus had been a little annoyed when Y/N was chosen to stay with him and Hope. But she was who Hayley trusted most and so, she was there with him.
“She’s human Elijah.” Klaus muttered, clearly frustrated as he tried to keep his voice down on the phone. “If something happens, she isn’t going to be able to protect Hope.”
Klaus was constantly belittling her, taking the knife off her when she was cutting carrots because if she dropped it, her reflexes weren’t fast enough. When she held Hope he consistently fussed about the way she was holding her. He didn’t like her to feed Hope, or get up in the night when cried.
He didn’t want her there.
Y/N had been perceived as weak by the family for the entirety of the time knowing them. She knew that in comparison she was. That she couldn’t defend herself well against vampires or wolves or witches. She probably wasn’t physically strong enough to fight off another human. And the more that Klaus scoffed and huffed at her whenever she did something, Y/N became increasingly quieter and tried to leave Hope in Klaus’s hands whilst she watched from the sides.
However, Klaus also didn’t trust Y/N to buy the right things. So he had relented and let her stay alone with Hope whilst he went to the shop. In honesty, he enjoyed being away from her and the house so had taken a seat at a cafe to ponder his thoughts.
The break he’d given himself was immediately regretted when he pulled up to the safe house. The door was kicked in, windows smashed.
He moved quickly, rushing inside and up the stairs. Klaus went straight to Hope’s room, running out quickly when she wasn’t in her crib.
“Y/N!” He yelled, focusing his hearing and flying back down the stairs. “Y/N!?”
His speed died down when he saw a man led across the dining room floor. A kitchen knife by his hand and another in his gut. Blood seeped from various points. Klaus swallowed thickly, seeing his knuckled bruised, light cuts across his arms and neck from where Y/N must’ve gotten him back. The man’s eyes stared up to the seeing.
Klaus’s gaze shifted when he heard Hope coo and the shaky sound of Y/N shushing her.
He walked slowly to the kitchen, looking around a little confused before his hearing locked onto one of the bottom cupboards. His brows furrowed and he felt his eyes sting and he knelt down and opened the door.
Y/N had her back to him, a cry leaving her when the door opened. Hope was to her chest, shielded entirely.
“It’s me, love.” He whispered, his hands gently as he helped her out of the tight space. Her body shook and he stared at her in astonishment. She was covered in wounds. Her cheek and eye already bruising whilst her arm and abdomen bled quickly.
“I’m sorry.” She whimpered. “I couldn’t get to the phone.” Her lip quivered and her eyes wouldn’t meet his. She continued to hold Hope, looking at her with another cry. “I got blood on her.” She sniffed, her hand lifting to wipe the baby’s cheek but Y/N’s skin was dripping in red.
“It’s alright,” Klaus shook his head, gently taking her bloody hand in his. “You kept her safe.” He whispered, pulling her body close into his hold. She continued to tremble, and apologise under her breath.
He took Hope from her slowly, setting her down in the bouncer in the living room, just across from the dining room where the intruder still lay. Then Y/N was fed his blood, his hand stroking the back of her head soothingly whilst she held his forearm to her face.
Klaus told her not to look when they walked through the dining room, he blocked her view with his body and grabbed Hope before they all went up stairs.
“It’s alright, just have a shower and you’ll feel better.” He assured, watching her stare into the mirror in horror at the blood still covering her. Half of it hers, the other belonging to the man downstairs. “I’ll call Hayley and Elijah.” He told her but Y/N quickly protested.
“Don’t tell Hayley.” Her eyes pleaded and Klaus agreed quickly. He didn’t know why she didn’t want Hayley to know but considering she had just risked her own life and taken someone else’s to protect his daughter, he would do as she asked.
He cleaned up the mess whilst she was in the shower. He put the items he had bought away and disposed of the body and any droplets of blood that still lingered.
Elijah was called, told the truth and warned not to tell anybody else what had happened.
“Just say we need to relocate. That I suspect something, Y/N doesn’t want Hayley to know she killed someone.” He whispered, the words sounding foreign on his tongue. A few hours before he thought Y/N was defenceless and useless, now he felt indebted and perplexed.
So the others would arrive tomorrow to help move everything into a new safe house.
Klaus went to tell Y/N, knocked on her bedroom door and waited. When she didn’t answer he went inside anyway, but she was still in the bathroom. The shower still ran and the sound of the water hitting the tiles almost drowned out the sound of her crying.
Klaus stood quietly outside of the door for a moment, his eyes softening as he tapped the door with his knuckles.
“Love?” He called, his hand moving to the handle. “Come out?”
When she made no reply, he opened the door. But she screamed at him to go away. He flinched, halting the movement of the door and hesitating.
“Y/N…please come back out.” He closed his eyes, hearing her whimper and sniff. Eventually he heard her footsteps pad toward him. Klaus opened his eyes back up and looked back at her. She held the towel loose around herself, her face pink and swollen from crying. “Why don’t you get changed and we can give Hope her dinner before bed?” He suggested, his hand moving to touch but her body moved away. Klaus pulled his hand back and nodded, leaving her room quietly.
He stood patiently outside her bedroom door holding Hope. Everything was quiet as he sat opposite her, watching Y/N bottle feed Hope. For once, he made no comments.
Klaus smiled when Y/N swaddled her, laying her down in her cot and hesitantly leaving the room.
“We’ll leave tomorrow, okay?” He whispered before she slipped back into her room.
But Y/N couldn’t sleep. Every little noise made her heart race. She got up as quietly as she could, her own breathing louder than her footsteps were as she quickly went to Hope’s nursery. Her heart stopped when she wasn’t in the crib.
Klaus sat bolt upright when Y/N came crashing into his room, the door swinging open as she cried his name.
“No, no love it’s alright. She’s here-“ he pointed to the travel cot beside his bed.
“Oh” Y/N breathed, her face tinged red in embarrassment as she shifted awkwardly.
“I was worried to leave her too,” he murmured, climbing out of bed and coming over to her. He could tell she hadn’t slept at all yet. “Do you want to stay in here tonight?” Klaus offered, smiling faintly when she nodded.
He let her lay closest to Hope, he knew she was looking down at her from the edge quietly. Klaus laid beside her, listening to her breathe until he was sure she’d finally gotten to sleep.
The next morning they were woken by a loud banging. Then Hopes cries.
Y/N was terrified and Klaus had let out a surprised breath when she grabbed onto him.
“Stay here, stay with Hope.” He told her, glancing at his daughter before hurrying down the stairs.
His let out a sigh when he saw Elijah, Rebekah and Hayley on the other side of the front door. Rebekah scrunched her face up at the sight of her brother in just his briefs.
“Come in, I’ll uh get Hope.” He nodded, letting them in before locking the door behind them. Hayley’s jaw dropped when Y/N came in view, coming out of Klaus’s room.
“Who was it?” She asked, her eyes landing on Hayley. She panicked, looking at Klaus as if to ask if he had told Hayley what had happened but he shook his head.
To the others it looked completely different. Hayley groaned, thinking her best friend had also fallen victim to the Mikaelson charm and Rebekah rolled her eyes at Klaus’s inability to keep it in his pants.
Only Elijah knew what had really happened. Y/N decided it was easier to let the others think she had slept with Klaus than to admit the truth, and Klaus could tell when she hesitated to deny it.
He cleared his throat and headed back up the stairs, pulling her back into his room and ignoring the girls dramatic groans.
“I’m sorry- I should’ve said we didn’t.” Y/N apologised but Klaus didn’t care.
“I don’t mind, love.” He simply stated, cupping her face and looking at the fear and sadness that still painted her face.
How was he supposed to get angry at her after the way he’d found her yesterday?
He just didn’t have it in him to mock anything about her anymore. Even Elijah was slightly shocked when Klaus didn’t correct the way Y/N picked up Hope. Instead he sat beside her and they both cooed to Hope.
Soon they were all unboxing things in a new safe house.
But even in that house, Klaus laid awake, listening to Y/N pace her room. Eventually he would bring her to his bed, or she would knock on his door. It became natural within a couple weeks. Whether they were in New Orleans or in the safe house, his bed had become hers.
They continued to let everyone else believe they were together because Klaus and Y/N were no longer opposed to the idea.
In fact, Klaus had began fantasising.
His mind would wonder as he laid against her at night. Muse the idea of a date, think about what she’d like to do, he wondered what she would wear and if he’d get to take it off her. It were those sorts of thoughts that got him in trouble. Y/N would squirm when she felt him harden against her lower back.
The first couple times, she tried to ignore it but after a couple more weeks, she could feel her lips twitch up when she felt him. When she heard his breathing speed up just slightly.
“What are you thinking about?” She whispered and he swallowed thickly. It was late, really late. Klaus was 90% sure was asleep. Her voice startled him slightly and he felt his face warm.
“Nothing.” He replied but a groan slipped past his lips when she shuffled round to face him. Her ass no longer against his crotch. He felt her look down, at his little problem. Klaus watched her glance back to his eyes.
“Nothing?” She asked and he hummed faintly.
He could hear her moving, her hand coming up his bare chest to his neck. Klaus pressed his head down, forehead touching hers as she caressed his skin.
“Nothing.” He repeated before pressing his lips to hers. Y/N let her eyes flutter closed, the feel of him flooding her senses as he kissed her gently. In all honesty, Klaus might’ve had a few dirty thoughts about her in the past. When he found her infuriating and irritating, he wondered if he could fuck some sense into her. He’d never thought he would be so gentle with her until that day.
But holding her then, Klaus never wanted to see her in pain again.
