HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Hello from my namesake, Kyber (first photo, she’s mid jump to my arm…because she’s “photogenic”)💛
…and also her partner in crime, Ilum 🩵
(They’re gearing up for their molt, so they are starting to look a little special)
Fuck it.
I'm about to fall asleep but AU where the whole "your lightsaber is your life" thing is more literal.
The Jedi are spirits, rumored to be gods, trapped in kyber crystals.
They are largely powerless at first glance, but if a saber is built they can manifest outwardly as something that APPEARS to be a person, with the ability to touch things and even eat.
Unsettling, though.
Possibly it's rumored that children will sometimes disappear in the night, and their parents will only find a glowing rock in their bed or the garden
And they take it, this humming thing, desperate, to the Jedi, because who else would know what this rock is? It seems to WANT to go to the Temple, and is somehow projecting that...
(People don't know the rocks ARE the Jedi. They think it's more like the key to a pocket dimension that traps and STORES the Jedi.)
To kill a Jedi, you need to shatter the crystal.
It's very "enchanted blade has a soul" but some of them are born (very rarely, Anakin's the first in decades) and some of them are gathered from Illum. The Jedi make trips to find if anyone has been "born," gaining enough energy to become independently sapient instead of just the background vibe of the cave's hivemind.
Illum is Mother.
No Steven Universe jokes, please
it would be interesting if a Jedi's kyber crystal was a more literal embodiment of their soul, the way that dragon's eldunari are in the Inheritance Cycle
they use their kyber to build their sabers, which is why it's such a huge taboo to lose or destroy them, but they keep the true nature of their kyber secret, and use the planet of Illum as their cover for 'retrieving' kyber, while the Temple there is mostly ceremonial for testing if an Initiate is mature enough to be trusted to carry their soul externally to their own body
retired and deceased Jedi pass their kyber down in the form of their saber to their lineage descendants, to carry that knowledge and experience into their futures once their mortal body is no longer capable of looking after them
Sith, however, still bleed their own souls, or else steal a Jedi's kyber to make use of their strength in their own weapon against the Jedi's will
during the Clone Wars, Grievous knows exactly what he's doing as he collects Jedi lightsabers, and delights in taunting Jedi with the tormented souls of their fallen compatriots
the lightsaber that Obi-Wan passes down to Luke contains Anakin's true soul, since Obi-Wan managed to take it from him before he could bleed it himself
Andor S2
Physically I am alone, baking into my sofa while suffering against the heat of summer. At one point I might have accepted my fate and waited for the weather to turn me into a crispy carcass to be eaten by whatever rodents or insect find me first.
But right now I do not care about the heat. I do not care that I am boiling alive in my own home. Right now all I care about is the absolute peak cinema I just watched.
The series finale of Andor did not disappoint, and I can hardly express in words the emotion I am feeling. Joy, for having experienced it. Grief, for knowing how it ends. Anger, for not being entitled to more.
There is a huge stereotype about Star Wars fans, "They hate Star Wars more than anyone". Normally I'd laugh and offer a cheap expression of "real" or "based". But right now... I don't hate Star Wars.
I don't think I have ever really hated it, only hated the commercialization of it. The sequels and many of the shows were cheap attempts at getting our attention, making money by exploiting us and the franchise we love. They pour in dollar after dollar, expecting that we heed to every one of their demands and take the garbage they've thrown at us with a smile on our face.
I hated that for so long Star Wars was treated as a machine, born to make money and nothing else. But looking at Andor I can see that there are creators out there, and fans, that see it as I do. I don't want them to slap my favorite character on a title card and make a show that has nothing to do with them. I want a story. A real story. About the people, the planets, survival.
Andor is not "A Star Wars Story", its a story about Andor, about a rebellion. It's the story of people who just want to watch the sunrise again, without having to worry about the light being blocked by an imperial banner. It's a story about people, who just happen to exist in the setting of Star Wars. And that is what makes it so great.
But enough with the vague descriptions, it's time I dissected as much as I can possible remember and process in this moment. Spoilers ahead for Andor S2
Decided I'm too tired to do any drawtober variant so have a cluster of kyber crystals.
My OC salvaged his broken lightsaber casing and used them for his main saber (blue) and a backup (yellow) shoto for he and my wife's OC.
