Why Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds So Obsessed With Giving Spock a Girlfriend?

The Paramount+ drama is shortchanging Spock — and the franchise's progressive legacy

"This version of Spock appears to be a serial monogamist, moving directly from T'Pring to Chapel to La'an in a cloud of romantic angst. We can interpret this as a facet of the young Spock's emotionalism, but as he embarks on yet another romance, I find myself getting frustrated on two fronts. First, that the show seems disinterested in exploring other elements of Spock's personality, such as foreshadowing his future success as an officer and diplomat. And second, that Strange New Worlds keeps introducing more and more straight romances while queer representation remains on the back burner."

Some thoughts on Spock's latest (and least convincing) romantic subplot in Strange New Worlds, tying into the legacy of Kirk/Spock fandom, and how this show caters to the safest possible forms of nostalgia.

I hate to say this bc I do genuinely like her, but La'an gives off major self-insert/fanfiction MC vibes...

Descendant of the most notorious TOS villain

Tragic backstory with the gorn

Cool name with an apostrophe in it

Badass security officer on the enterprise

Cunty eyeliner, freckles and dark hair which is usually braided

Had a fling with Kirk in an alternate timeline

Friends with benefits (and dance partners) with Spock but he seems to want more idk I think that's what the sock thing was implying, plus vulcan Chapel saying that they fit to each other better

Don't get me wrong, she rocks. But everytime I see her I can't help but feel that she'd be the perfect self insert MC in an angsty TOS fanfiction lol. Istg if she dies and that is what changes Spock into the TOS version of himself that would be sooooo angsty fanfic.

I love this. It's Christina Chong ft. Ethan Peck (La'an and Spock from ST: SNW) and I'm just addicted to hearing Ethan Peck sing. I can't help but imagine them singing this in character. There's also a nice link between Leonard Nimoy having a music career and hearing Ethan Peck on a song too.
