“I believed you even when I knew you were lying.”

How odd, for me to look at you and feel nothing.
John 15:12 (NLT) - This is My commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
Loved you at your worst, but that didn't matter.
Everything I Wanted
You were everything I wanted;
the fire that lit my skin,
the shelter where my storms grew quiet,
the voice that could shift my day
with a single word.
You were the gaze
that made me braver,
the embrace that felt like home,
the impossible gravity
that pulled me without mercy.
But you were never what I chose.
Choice demands reason,
future,
a path that can be walked
without breaking the world around us.
Choice is made at the table
where fear and duty sit,
and the heart is outnumbered.
So I carried you
as desire without decision,
as love without a map.
I loved you in silence,
in distance,
in the ache of what could never be.
And maybe that is our truth:
that you were everything I wanted,
but never what I chose.
Not because the love was small,
but because it was too vast,
too costly,
too much for the life we had to live.
Still, when the years unfold,
and every other face fades,
you will remain,
the proof that wanting and choosing
are not the same,
and that sometimes the greatest love
is the one we could not keep.
Grudges
I hold grudges like a hand, with warmth and affection, like holding a lover's hand. I cling to it as if it's hope. But what hope is there for the hopeless?
I hold grudges close to my heart, folded neatly in the crevices. I place them in folders and scroll through them like TV channels.
I hold grudges like a starving man clings to a morsel of food. Like it's the only comfort I've ever known.
I hold grudges because it's safe to hold onto them rather than people. They are signs written in neon red, screaming in bold letters, "see, this is exactly how it's supposed to be."
I hold grudges because maybe I like the bitter reminder of grief and sadness. Or maybe because I want to cling to the rage for one more moment.
I hold grudges because they hold me captive. Grab me by my throat, and won't let go.
I hold grudges but maybe I wish I won't.
