Celia Pym
London based artist Celia Pym has moved onto different work now, but her seven-plus year project ‘The Catalogue of Holes’ was a collaborative exercise in mending strangers’ clothes, each piece of which grew out of her relationship with garment's owner as well as the object itself.
This is my first attempt to mend a piece of knitting that got ripped (swipe for "before" picture). I used a contrasting yarn on purpose, so that the patch would be visible - reminiscent of Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), a japanese technique of repairing (ceramic) pieces in a way that the break and repair is not hidden, but treated as part of the history of the piece. . I've written a short blog post about it: https://knitting-and-so-on.blogspot.com/2020/07/darn-it-or-kintsugi.html . #makedoandmend #mendingmayhem #mendingclothes #mending #mendingmatters #darnit #darning #visiblemending #clothingrepairs #knitwear #kintsugi #slowfashion #reducewaste #knittersofinstagram #knitwear #lovedclotheslast #makersofinstagram #clothingrepair #learnsomethingnew #flicken #reparierenstattwegwerfen #darningwoollens https://www.instagram.com/p/CDHUgmOJ87A/?igshid=155tj4vkvj1vn
If you're a woman who likes #bodysurfing, #highdiving, #cycling or just doing #cartwheels, but who doesn't want to look as though she is the Olympics when relaxing by the pool or at the beach, your search for a swimsuit is over. Pride's full coverage swimsuit is self lined for anatomical smoothing and shape control, and has bust darts to support larger chests or, in the case of petite ladies, to prevent chests being flattened out. Thick 0.63mm durable rubber is used throughout and, on the seamless front panel, is fully stitched to the lining. Each #handmade piece is made with the aim of safeguarding standards Australia has worked to achieve in top #qualityswimwear, for a nation of people swimming year round and almost every day. Available in any colour you see at prideswim.com.au in Australian size 6 to 14 (US 2 - 10). #swimwear #swimbrand #slowfashion #lovedclotheslast #fashrev #buylesschoosewell #swimsuit #australianmadefashion #australianswimwewr #australianswumbrand #qualityswimwear #chlorineresistant #recyclednylon #recycledplastic. @carvicofabrics @eclipsetextiles #onepiece (at PrideSwim) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9N3-fQAikC/?igshid=2pwlwg7tp62y
Happy my illustrations for @fash_rev got a little revival following the #10yearchallenge 👘 sadly, most of the garments discarded in 2009 have probably yet to decompose or biodegrade. Considering that around 350.000 tonnes of UK clothing are sent to landfill each year, maybe the real challenge of 2019 should be demanding clothing made from biodegradable materials and closing the loop! ♻️ #illustration #slowfashion #liedirkx #fashionrevolution #lovedclotheslast (at London Borough of Hackney) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtBkqenh5hW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8v2npkzhmria
Impacting the Revolution
With every movement, idea or venture comes a long string of various factors that impact its effectiveness. In order for a movement to be successful and effectively target its demographic so as to encourage positive results it must first identify all external factors connecting to the issue. For Fashion Revolution these factors are plentiful, but there are a few which certainly stand out more than others:
1. BREXIT
The phrase on everyones lips. With a Brexit deal still not secured, Britain is currently in a period of serious political instability with many businesses completely unsure what leaving the EU will mean for them. Brexit could impact Fashion Revolution both positively and negatively. It is possible that tighter trade restrictions between the UK and European countries could lead to brands making themselves more localised, producing their products in the UK providing more jobs and boosting the economy whilst lowering the levels of emissions associated with importing and exporting goods. This would also decrease the levels of sweatshop labour used by big companies and protect workers rights. On the other hand, changes in trade laws may drive more companies to use factories and sweatshops in countries, such as Bangladesh, outside the EU in order to continue producing goods at a cheaper rate.
2. THE FINANCIAL POSITION OF GEN Z
Generation Z are said to have the lowest level of disposable income, and therefore are easily drawn to online stores such as PrettyLittleThing as then they are able to keep up with the latest fast fashion trends whilst remaining within their budget. If companies turn to making their products within the UK it is almost certain that costs will rise leading to higher prices. This will then further discourage Generation Z from shopping more ethically and sustainably, not because they don't want to make a change but because they simply can't afford to.
3. CONSUMER MINDSET
Now more than ever consumers are constantly wanting more and more. Instead of the usual Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections there are now far more seasons in the fashion world with brands releasing new garments weekly, if not daily. It is hard to know whether it is the brands producing more that is making consumers want more or whether it is the consumers demanding more that is encouraging the brands to produce more, but one thing is certain; this mindset of constantly wanting more needs to change. This is a social attitude which could be changed through the use of social media influencers who Generation Z connect with. If more influencers promoted sustainable brands and boasted a #Lovedclotheslast attitude instead of constantly pushing fast fashion then a true impact could really be made.
4. ONLINE GIANTS
The surge of hugely successful online retailers constantly churning out trend after trend at a completely unsustainable rate is ever rising and sucking in consumers. Now it is almost impossible to scroll down your Instagram feed without coming across at least one sponsored or promoted post, likely from a website you have recently visited, encouraging you to participate in this monstrous and addictive industry. Being able to order clothes at the click of a button with little expense makes it far too easy for consumers to dissociate themselves from the truth behind their clothes.
5. HUMAN RIGHTS LAWS
Trade increasing in countries such as India could put even more workers in danger, something Fashion Revolution are trying to put a stop to. In the UK there are tighter laws in place with regards to the safety and health of workers, which companies must adhere to. In other countries these laws are not implemented as strongly, or rarely exist at all, leading to tragedies such as the Rana Plaza disaster. In Pakistan, they have been consistently attempting to pass a bill to improve the safety and wellbeing of workers since 2008 but each time the bill is pushed aside as the government feel other things are more important when it comes to time and funding. The wellbeing of workers should be of upmost importance, and it could be something as obvious as strong union representation that is needed to make the voices of the workers heard and ensure that safety procedures are followed and implemented.
Australia invented the #swimsuit. #Pride's mission is to defend it. . . . . #fewerbetterthings # #lovedclotheslast #elizabethsuzann #buyless #fashrev #ecofashion #annettekellerman #retroswimsuit #qualityswimwear #custommade #madetoorder #nationalpride #australianmadefashion #australianmade #australiaday #estherwilliams #bathingsuit #australianswimwear #slowfashion #onepiecefan #australia #patriotism #australianheritage #newcastlemodel #swimsuitmodel #bathingbeauty #onepiece (at Newcastle Ocean Baths) https://www.instagram.com/p/B64eSBYgOQR/?igshid=tj47pzb1l0gi
