lynel boi, chapter four: a new friend.
Link rushed toward the Hinox, the left leg to be specific. Link grabbed it as he passed, tugging hard and flipping the Hinox to lie flat on its face.
Link kept running, straight towards the boy, who shouted - either as a war cry or out of alarm, Link couldn’t tell - when he saw Link heading in his direction.
Link slowed, only a little, and scooped the young Hylian up in his arms, and headed toward the edge of the Hinox’s territory.
A sharp pain shot up Link’s arm, and he looked down, the boy had BIT him, hard. Link growled and the boy flinched back, ears tucked away like a scared cat.
Link set him down, carefully, and headed back to fight the Hinox, which was doing its little jog in his direction.
Hyrule couldn’t believe his luck- his bad luck, that is. He’d been wandering around, inspecting the weird trees while he walked in the trenches of this strange era.
The second he decided to leave the trench, there was a deafening roar, and he was suddenly face to face with a forty-foot-tall, fat, red monster with one eye.
Hyrule dodged the first attack, which was surprising given how fast the thing was when it tried to crush him with its fist.
Hyrule heard another roar, and - to his horror - what he saw was a Lynel a third bigger than the ones in his era. The thing had white swirl patterns all over it, except the underbelly of its lower half and its legs. The hooves had black swirls reaching upward, but they didn’t extend far. The whole thing was covered in scars and had wicked horns curving out behind its head. With the scars and golden skin - Hyrule didn’t know how many levels above red that was, but it must be a lot - this thing was going to be a dangerous enemy. This might not go well, it - it knocked the other monster over.
It was FIGHTING the giant thing. And now it was headed toward Hyrule.
Hyrule yelped in alarm and was about to jump to the side, out of its way, when the beast scooped him up in its arms and ran.
Hyrule tried to twist out of the thing's grip, but nothing worked; it had a tight hold on him, and they were still shooting across the bog.
He inspected the beast's arms - one of which was weird, black, and covered in strange metal, while the other was scarred - for a second before biting the nearest one.
It hardly seemed to do anything to the monster except annoy it as it glared at him. Hyrule flinched. The thing had striking eyes, black, void-like sclera and pupils, but bright, electric-blue irises that he swore were glowing.
Hyrule was set down pretty far out from where the other beast was, though it still had its eye on him. Of course it did; no matter what era he went to, monsters were always drawn to him.
The Lynel ran off, heading back toward its apparent foe. Maybe they were going to fight over which could kill him? That had happened before between territorial beasts like Lynels and Zora.
The golden beast took out a savage looking bow and fired FIVE SHOTS AT ONCE at the other monster. The arrows hit the thing straight in the eye, and it fell back on its rear, kicking its legs and holding its face. Throwing a tantrum? Yeah, that's what it looked like.
‘Wait,’ Hyrule thought, slapping himself back to his own situation instead of watching the fight, ‘I need to get out of here.’
Hyrule started running back in the direction he thought camp was; if one of the monsters followed, it would be weakened from the fight and could easily be taken down by eight heroes.
Hyrule looked over his shoulder just in time to see a log hit him in the back.
His ears rang. Was that another roar? No, no, he had to get up. All he could manage was to roll over. The sky… was it normally so blue? Wasn’t it supposed to be more grey? How far from his cave was he? His chest hurt.
Link dodged the tree the Hinox had thrown, which had been a lousy toss anyway. Or… Link looked over his shoulder to see the boy flat on his face in the grass, definitely out of the Hinox’s territory.
Link turned his attention back to the Hinox, now very angry. It had targeted the kid even though it had no reason to anymore!
He charged forward, knocking the Hinox over again and jumping up on its back, stabbing his savage Lynel sabre into the nape of its neck.
The Hinox did its dramatic death roar, and he jumped down as it died.
He collected the loot. Using the Sheikah Slate to gather the organs from a distance after he sliced it open, as he did NOT feel like getting covered in blood and sinew at the moment.
He ran over to the boy who was - surprisingly - not dead, just unconscious.
Link checked over the boy. He had three broken ribs, five cracked ones, and a broken arm. His spine and back were weirdly okay, so Link could prop the boy up and force feed him a healing elixir, which fixed up the broken bones quickly.
Once that was done, Link scooped up the kid and headed toward the plume of smoke he had seen earlier; it might be the kid's camp. But before Link could get there, night fell, and he was suddenly busy keeping watch while the boy slept.Link found himself oddly fond of the kid, despite the fact that he had bitten Link. So Link stayed by his side while he let the kid sleep through the night, shooting at any stal that crawled their way out of the dirt or the odd wolf before they could wake the kid up.
Time was worried, no, worried didn’t do it justice. Time was panicked, he hid it well enough that most of his boys couldn’t see it, as they needed someone emotionally stable - or at least someone who seemed that way - to rely on.Hyrule had been missing since five o'clock YESTERDAY. No one knew where he was. Time had sent Twilight out in the form of Wolfie to track their traveller down, but neither hero had returned yet.
Hyrule was one of the newer members of the chain and one of the only ones who clearly expressed that they didn’t trust anyone there. Part of Time told him that Rulie had run off, hoping to escape them. He hoped that wasn’t true.
After pretending to eat Wind’s disaster that he called breakfast, Time checked that the rest of his boys were there.
“We should start searching.”
Time turned to face Legend. The red-clad hero wore a light blue cap, no pants, and winged leather boots. He had an almost constant glare, pink hair, and a sassy attitude. He was also very overprotective and closest to the traveller.
“Twi is already on it,” Time said calmly in his best ‘everything is fine, and I’m in charge’ voice. “We wouldn’t accomplish much if we all split up looking for him. Twi knows his stuff.”
“Found him!” Twi said, approaching the group and shaking twigs out of his hair and holding up a green and white fletched arrow, “he’s not in immediate trouble, but he needs us.”
Hyrule stretched. Then briefly panicked when he couldn’t feel his new friend, Legend, next to him. But no, Legend must have gotten up early again. Hyrule relaxed, then remembered the previous night's events and shot upright. He frantically searched his surroundings, yep, there was the strange Lynel, inspecting what looked like a brush styled like some strange fluffy fanged animal.
Hyrule tried to quietly get up, so as not to alert the thing he was awake. It seemed the sun had just barely risen, and birds were chirping.
It turned and looked at him. Hyrule froze. It got up and walked toward him, towering over Hyrule.
It held out a banana, seeming to be offering it to him.
“...er, no thanks,” Hyrule stood, ready to run. It wasn’t safe to accept food from strangers, whether or not they had saved you.
The banana disappeared into blue tendrils and was quickly replaced by an apple.
“You’re not goona leave me alone until I accept, are you?”
The Lynel shoved the apple closer, glancing over Hyrule’s body. He had to admit he was very thin, not as thin as he used to be thanks to the past four weeks with the chain, but still obviously malnourished.
Hyrule sighed and took the apple. Without breaking eye contact with the Lynel, Hyrule took a bite, it wasn’t like the beast didn’t have other ways to kill him. Immediately, his eyes widened. It was DELICOUS, best apple ever, ten out of ten, very juicy and sweet.
“Sorry, I don’t have anything to give you back,” Hyrule said, uncertain. “I could maybe heal your face? It looks like you got hurt.”
The Lynel felt at its face when Hyrule pointed. He waved for the Lynel to come closer, and it lowered itself until they were at eye level.
Hyrule extended his hands and activated his healing spell. The scabs fell to the ground, revealing smooth - still scarred - skin underneath.
“Okay,” Hyrule said, backing up and glancing around. They were only an hour’s walk from his camp, IF he remembered correctly. “I’m going to go now, okay? Don’t follow.”
He headed off in the general direction of the chain. The beast followed on all six, tipping its head.
Whatever. Hyrule kept walking; the Lynel started to change direction and rumbled something at him. Hyrule turned, trying to figure out what was wrong. He looked at the bright blue sky again; there was a plume of smoke - probably something burning - in that direction.
That was his Chain alright.
He changed course. Then turned around and pointed back behind the Lynel, “Go that way,” Hyrule said, faintly hoping it would work, “shoo, leave me alone. My friends will try to kill you.”
The Lynel made the shooing motion back at him, “meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow,” it said in a very deep voice, mimicking Hyrule’s tone. He hadn’t known they could mewl.
Hyrule sighed and kept walking.…“Alright,” Wars said, looking over his brothers, no friends, he’d only met them three weeks ago. He shouldn’t be so attached.
“Is everyone all packed up? Wind put out that fire you're burning the food.”
Wind scurried back to the small fire pit and stomped out the fire.
“We can head out now?” Wars asked the old man, who looked deep in thought, though Wars could read him well enough to tell he was stressed.
“Yes,” Time said, glancing up and checking on his boys. “Make sure Wind and Four put away the food and stay here.”
“Twi said it’s close enough we can shout if we need backup, I want your group to follow, but stay farther behind. Am I understood?”
“I… yes. Alright.” Wars wanted to go, he needed to know if his br- FRIEND was alright.
