Dream: Deathworld and the Many Levels

Yesterday I had a dream that involved really odd concepts of death and underground worlds. Every time someone "died" they weren't really dead but would fall through the ground to a lower level of underworld. Each lower level was increasingly more "earthy" with fewer, more run-down, & rotting buildings.

Some of the people I saw there were skeletons, but some were just normal-looking people. Literally no one was aggressive, except for whoever was hunting me and my friends, somehow following us down through each level and sending us deeper and deeper. We knew we wouldn't actually "die" in the sense that people in the overworld think of death, but we were terrified because we didn't know what the lowest limit was, if there was anything else after that, or if we would ever be able to go back.

I think the force hunting us was supposed to be the government, like they were trying to silence us because we knew something we weren't supposed to know, but now I can't remember what that was. (For the rest of this post, I'll refer to this mysterious force as They or Them with a capital T.)

The details are fuzzy now, but this is what I can remember of the structure of the underworld:

Just after dying in the overworld, I found myself in what looked like an underground suburb. The ceiling was dark like night time, but every now and then I would be able to see dirt and rocks through the darkness. The houses were like old-fashioned country homes with white fences and white siding, and there were mailboxes and hedges and just general nice-looking suburban type scenery. I can't remember seeing any cars, so I don't think there were any. There were street lamps everywhere, though, so it was easy to see even though it was dark. I met some other people who were dead and was hanging out with them for a while until They came down and attacked us again. As I sank into the ground I could see all the dirt, rocks, bones, and bugs passing by until I came out on the other side. Some of my new dead friends were also there with me.

The next level down was a lot like the first one, except all the houses were really old and the paint was peeling, the windows were broken, etc. Then the same thing happened again.

The next level down was even more run down. The houses were creaky, uninsulated, the doors wouldn't close all the way, and everyone stayed indoors because the streets were so full of dirt and piles of rocks that it was difficult to navigate without getting lost. This is the point at which a good portion of the people I met were looking like skeletons.

After that was like a quick montage of continuously running from Them, dying over and over and passing through multiple levels of rotting shacks and unstable little huts, until it got to the point that there were no buildings left, only a bunch of skeletons huddling together under piles of dirt and trash.

Then, apparently They snuck up on me in my sleep I guess, because I don't remember getting caught again, but I woke up in a lower level that was just really dark with a wide road and some stone buildings with just a few dim street lamps spaced at pretty distant intervals. There were some dinosaur-like creatures that kind of looked like a vague impression of ankylosauras (the wide, heavy four-legged dinosaur with a big blunt club thing on its tail) but they were apparently tame and just existed alongside the humans there. My friends and I were staying in one of the houses (which, by the way, were a lot nicer now. They were very simple and not well-furnished, but they were sturdy and made of solid stone instead of wood like the houses in the higher levels) and found a nest of baby dinos, which quickly zoomed off and led us to their mother, so we got a dino guide to help us through the city.

I don't remember if this was a lower level or just another part of the same level, but eventually we came to an even nicer area where the shapes of the buildings kind of resembled old traditional Chinese buildings. The people in this area were mostly flesh-people, very few skeletons, and from this point on everything was mostly solid rock with less dirt. Some people here also had wheeled vehicles that were pulled by the dino-creatures.

Again, I don't remember how I got to the next lower level, but it was less civilized than previous levels. Instead of a city or town, it was basically just a stone forest, and every now and then there would be a little hut. The dino-creatures here were wild, but still not aggressive.

I don't know what was after that, but I was terrified that it would be nothing, or something very unpleasant. I woke up before I found out.

Okay a few days back I was very emotional about missing my dog and I came up with a Royai headcannon and because I don’t have many people to ramble about royai with I sent it to @the-flame-and-hawks-eye anonymously and the response made my week is it too late to become a well known Royai fan artist because I was too young to try when I first got into the series and my obsession has come back with a vengeance I finally got a bit of a break in my art school final project hell
