A Sanctuary for Stillness

While the world outside feels like it's constantly rushing toward the next big thing, my Texas studio has become a sanctuary for the slow and intentional. I’ve been sitting with the idea of "stillness" lately—not as an absence of movement, but as a deep, protective presence. My latest journal entry, Guardians of Stillness, is a reflection on how we can create anchors for our own peace.

Many things lie within the grasp of the woman whose capable fingers can execute a variety of embroidery stitches. Her is the ability to add the loving touch of beauty to a frock that makes a child heart sing with joy.

When I read this I thought of several things my mother made me when I was small. They didn’t have embroidery, but they did make my child heart sing with joy. I suspect this is why the makers’ movement and DIY has such appeal today.

This is from a booklet called Decorative Stitches and Trimmings from 1929 by the Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences, whose first booklets in dressmaking were all written by Mary Brooks Picken.

This custom snake sleeve sweater was an attempt to capture my client’s favorite snake, the Australian Tree Snake!

I used Tosh sport for the green and Sweet Georgia Yarns Sport

(Note to knitters: Sweet Georgia Yarns Sport is thinner than Madeline Tosh sport. Maybe use the DK weight if you’re mixing it in one project. Of course this can all be avoided with a LYS, but alas the nearest one is a 3hr drive from me).

We’re going to in-laws for this Christmas. I figured it doesn’t make sense to get a tree and the whole affair if we’re not going to be at home. But a nice festive cloth I got from my grandma and a few decorations can go a long way.
