💥 Odd destroys marabounta
Marabounta
Season 2, Episode 10
aka The One Where Jérémie Really Bugs XANA
Marabunta would totally get overhauled in that au.
I LOVE MARABOUNTA but it would really get overhauled. “Marabounta” in canon is basically the Lyoko Warriors teaming up with XANA to save Lyoko. Which is really cool, but that’s par the norm here. And I don’t really want to just repeat that only with the Green Phoenix replacing XANA, that’s kinda uninspired. So instead I decided it would be more along the lines of an inner-group conflict with character development.
- The Marabounta this time is designed as an AI that would protect Lyoko in XANA’s stead, so XANA can be materialized. It sounds kind, but Jeremie makes sure to look at XANA when he says “you won’t be needed there anymore”. He’s super frustrated by how much of a dick XANA is about his programs and telling him he’s not needed. So now he wants to make XANA feel like he’s not needed.
- XANA snips back that “well we all know how trustworthy your programs are, so maybe I’ll stay a little longer and make sure the Marabounta doesn’t bug out.” But a couple days pass and the Marabounta seems to be learning how to manage Lyoko well. XANA can’t find anything wrong with it, so he and Aelita agree they’ll leave tomorrow morning.
- But then the next day, XANA notices he’s feeling weaker. He runs a diagnostic and notices that parts of his codes are missing.
- It turns out the Marabounta heard Jeremie talk about how he wanted to replace XANA and, wanting to make its creator happy, took that literally. It’s actually started to infect XANA’s programming, copy his codes into itself, and then delete him piece by piece.
- XANA panics because he actually can’t get this thing out and it’s starting to eat him faster. Aelita literally wakes up that morning (if she can sleep in Lyoko?) to the sound of him screaming and his monsters all going haywire.
- She and XANA manage to isolate his infected parts, cut them off, and lock the Marabounta inside the strongest firewalls they can manage. Then they send out a red alert and the Lyoko Warriors rush to the factory to plan.
- Locking the Marabounta up isn’t a long-term solution because now that it has part of XANA’s codes, it’s gonna get stronger and eventually break out. Even as they’re talking, it’s managing to break through and hack the materialization program for XANA so they can’t get him out of there. They try to deactivate the Marabounta and it goes “no”. It’s basically turning into canon!XANA.
- By now XANA is screaming at Jeremie for almost getting him eaten alive and Jeremie is screaming at XANA for always being a dick to him. The rest of the group yells at them both for being idiots who have taken a dumb rivalry too far and shames them into silence.
- Because they managed to cut off the Marabounta before it could eat too much of XANA, it’s not omnipresent like him. Its physical presence is still limited to one sector. Ultimately Aelita decides to go there, enter Code XANA into the waytower, and delete the Marabounta along with the sector. The battle is the Lyoko Warriors + what XANA can spare fighting to get her there while the Marabounta fights to keep her away.
- (it’s probably the desert sector they lose because that’s my least favorite.)
- Jeremie learns a lesson about not rushing things to spite your rival, especially if it accidentally endangers him. XANA learns a lesson about not being a constant ass. At the end, he apologizes for being a jerk and Jeremie apologizes for almost getting him killed.
- After this, Jeremie and XANA get along better. There’s still the “Aelita” thing hanging between them but they aren’t actively antagonizing each other anymore.
An amusing little tidbit from the original script of “Marabounta”
"I loved when the monsters bowed to the Lyoko Warriors in Marabounta, it always makes me happy when the two sides work together for a common goal. It makes the enemy slightly more relateable."
If the Kollosus engaged Jeremie's Marabounta would it be helplessly consumed as any other monster would?
Eventually, yes, but the Kolossus would also be able to more easily dispel the marabounta from itself. It would take a while.
After you and the Lyoko Warriors collaborated to devirtualize the Marabounta why did you decide to order your monsters to take a bow and leave rather than attack?
I did not have the scyphozoa, or further monsters, prepared. An attack at the time would have been rather useless.
You vs another multi-agent program of your choosing, who would win?
Project Carthage.
Marabounta.
XANA Destruction Program.
I win.
