Sunday Six

Herbert's never slept on anything larger than a twin cot.

It had been one of the first things set ablaze in the old house.

The pedant in him who followed his mother's instructions to not play with chemicals on his toy chest had only briefly delighted in the loophole he'd found (playing with them on the bare surface of his mattress) before it, along with the top floor of the house, disappeared in a flash fire.

He hasn't mentioned it to Dan or Megan. It seemed like the sort of thing that would upset them.

“I never had to sign any papers at all,” Dan comments. “Everything of mine was held in trust for my care until I turned 21, then my aunt signed over what was left.”

“How much was left?”

“Enough for a small U-Haul and a tank full of gas to get to Johns Hopkins. ‘Didn’t take much -- I only had three boxes to my name plus a cat carrier.”

“Huh.” West hums thoughtfully. “That does explain your extreme nesting tendencies.”
