Of course Morrible is the officiant
"Fiyero saw what the Wizard did to Dr. Dillamond and still joined his ranks!" Now, see- that's where you're quite possibly flat out wrong. You're assuming Glinda told him the entire, full truth about the Animal genocide being orchestrated by the Wizard in the first place. As if homegirl hasn't manipulated her ass off in the past to get what she wants, or get rid of what she doesn't want. She knows how to clock social ques and manipulate the truth to fit her desire- telling Boq to ask out Nessa, giving Elphaba the hat, sensing the romance between Fiyeraba at the train, belittling Elphaba in DG in hopes for her to stay, banishing the Wizard when he's at his lowest (i.e finding out his daughter is dead). She may not be book smart ("form over content," "instead of always harping on the past," "they were popular," etc etc), but she sure as hell knows how all the social cogs work.
And considering that movie!Fiyero seems to be much more Animal-ally inclined than his musical counterpart, I would be... honestly, I'd be shocked if she told him everything. Because although Fiyero would still stay so he can make sure nobody kills Elphaba, I doubt he'd even try to make peace with Glinda if he knew she, quite frankly, didn't give a fuck about the Animals. And I think Glinda would know that, and would deliberately leave that out when she tells him how everything happened. I won't ever deny that Glinda cares for Elphaba- but the thing that sets her and Fiyero apart is caring for the Animals. Which is also one of the reasons why in the end, it's Fiyero and Elphaba escaping together and not the three of them.
Also, please for the love of God, remember that nobody at Shiz knew the Wizard was capturing the Animals. The Wizard didn't want people to know he was behind the Animal propaganda and capturing. Otherwise Elphaba would have never gone to him in the first place- plus the fact that the uniforms for Fiyero's squadron and the squadron capturing Animals were entirely different. All in all, it is incredibly likely he just... doesn't know. He's, presumably, not in charge of the Animals, and again, all his information comes from Glinda. Known manipulator Glinda. Doesn't care for the Animals Glinda. Stuck in a bubble of privilege Glinda. THAT Glinda.
Now, I'm not saying its impossible that he knew. Maybe he did. Maybe he actively captured some. But the only line we get of him even knowing about the Animals in the musical is, "there's a goat on the lamb." When, mind you, he was actively pretending to hate Elphaba until he got rid of his guards and held the Wizard at gun point so he couldn't call them back. He didn't exactly have time to ponder Dr. Dillamond's presence when he knew that if he didn't get to Elphaba first, it would get ugly. So... could it change in the movie? Absolutely. But don't act as though anything is canon yet- people always yap about Fiyero and Fiyeraba being rushed as justification for Gelphie, but then turn around and get mad at Fiyerabas for "not holding Fiyero accountable" as if we're not lacking critical information. Can't hold him accountable if there's almost nothing canon to hold him accountable for.
Weird headcannon Morrible got rejected from art school, ended up in magic and was like well this is my life now.
And later down the line she makes the propaganda posters,
She has the idea of a annoyed French woman who got rejected from art school and all of a sudden had to major in a “more stable career”
Working on something with @sarahchiyaseed 👀
Ok, so like, in the Cameo scene with kristen and Idina, they talk/sing about a prophesy. Which we know is used by Morrible and the wizard to manipulate Oz and rule it, but its obviously talking about Elphaba since she's the only one who can actually read it, plus its reaction to her.
So what if the prophesy had come with a little extra information? Something like how that wizard would also be green. Like yeah, maybe morrible and the wizard would still find a way to be in power, but it would only be because the ozians are waiting for their green wizard.
Cue Elphaba's birth, then. The prophesy is already widely known so every one and their grandmother is looking out for a green person. The wizard and morrible also send out guards to report any green people seen, whether to kill or control, as long as they stay in power. So now they find out a green baby has been born, because you can't tell me governor thrrop wouldn't throw a parade to announce how his wife has given birth to the great long awaited wizard.
This could actually change alot of things, one being Elphaba's mother doesn't die, because Frex isn't put off by Elphaba's greenness so he doesn't make her eat milk flowers.
This means Elphaba grows up preparing to be, if not already, Oz's ruler. Though i feel like morrible would find a way to latch on to her.
The reason she is saved and not killed could be because the wizard finds out she's his daughter, something that Elphaba's mother makes him promise to keep a secret, so maybe he stays because of that too.
But we'd still need a villain so morrible would have to play a long game to overthrow Elphaba from the throne. And perharps this is where Galinda and shiz come in.
Now i just thought of how morrible would kill the wizard because he would never actually let her hurt his daughter, but she'd have to do it without Elphaba knowing. She could blame the animals for it, or maybe Galinda would be blamed and the angst from that would keep me up at night for weeks.
There's a visual "joke" in Wicked Part II that made me so infuriated I think that's like 70% of the reason why I hated this movie so much.
Tell me why Maguire wrote such an adult, dark, complex novel about fascism, colonialism, genocide, racism, gender roles, religion and so many other fascinating, relevant and visceral themes, then Schwartz and Holzman did their own family friendly version of it, that yes, is watered down to fit the target audience (families) but still manages to be respectful and adult and beautiful and still talks about the same themes the books talk about, but in a more democratic language, accessible to a more diverse age spectrum (even though I still wouldn't say Wicked the musical is suitable for people younger than 12, but the novel is not suitable for people younger than 18, so there's that), and then Chu comes in and have ANIMALS SHOVING MORRIBLE'S FACE INTO A CAKE?!?!?! FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES?!?!?!
Part I had several moments that offended me as a fan of the musical, but this specific scene of Morrible having her face thrown into the wedding cake offended me as a human being. It insulted my intelligence, it insulted the magical yet mature world Schwartz, Holzman and Mantello built and it insulted Maguire's Magnum Opus.
Madame Morrible is a phenomenal villain, one that makes it down on history as one of the most terrifying ones, she deserves to be treated seriously, with respect. She's not Queen Ariana from Barbie in the Island Princess (which is a banger, don't get me wrong, but it's target audience is children of 10 and younger), she's Joseph Goebbels, and if I'm going to do historical fanfiction, I don't want to see Shoshanna Dreyfus throwing cake on Goebbels's face, that's not satisfying, that's not funny. I want to see the Jewish Bear deforming his body with a machine gun while Shoshanna burns down the movie theatre!
This was the worst crime of this movie, I was so mad I dreamt about it, and I swear to Oz, if this scene had happened after ALAYM, I would have walked out!
One thing that has always bothered me in the Wicked Musical is what the heck Madame Morrible is even getting out of helping the Wizard. I know she gets power from him, but really think about it.
She knows he’s fraud and in a world with real (though scarce) magic, it’s only a matter of time before someone shows up to expose him. Yes, the goal is to find this someone to act as the Wizard’s power for him before their charade is exposed, but that’s gambling their manipulations work and that this powerful person doesn’t turn against them (a gamble they lost Elphaba’s case). It’s also a gamble Morrible loses AGAIN with Galinda when she’s so successful grooming Galinda and making all of Oz love Galinda that Galinda becomes even more beloved than Morrible is, as seen when Galinda easily seizes power and sends Morrible to prison the second the Wizard leaves.
Also, if it’s because Morrible enjoys being the power behind the throne and having influence through the Wizard, then wouldn’t someone like Elphaba, who could easily replace her in that role, be threatening to her? If Elphaba joined the Wizard, then eventually Elphaba would grow so strong that the Wizard wouldn’t need Morrible anymore. The only advantage Morrible has on Elphaba is her years of experience and current social standing, so besides temporary and very unstable power/position, what is she getting out of this? Was Morrible’s plan to use Elphaba for her magic, but ultimately get rid of her and replace her with another magical student and then repeat the cycle so no one ever gets strong enough to challenge Morrible’s power? Is Morrible doing this because she has a personal grudge against the animals? Did Dr. Dillamond take a faculty position away from her and this is how she gets revenge? Are she and the Wizard a thing on the down low and that’s why she’s doing this? Also, what is her plan if the Wizard is publicly exposed? Is her backup plan to turn against the Wizard if things go south and manipulate Elphaba and Galinda by telling them that she was strong-armed into joining him and has always cared deeply for the two girls because honestly, I can see her doing that.
The only other theory I’ve seen is that Morrible used her weather powers to cause the great drought and give herself an opportunity to take control of Oz. However, she knew she couldn’t read the Grimmiere, and that to stay in power, she would need someone who could read or at least, someone the people believed could read it, preferably someone she could manipulate either by making herself their mentor (Elphaba) or making them a powerless figurehead that’s depend on her and that she can shift blame to if things go south (The Wizard). In this case, Morrible might try to replace the Wizard with Elphaba if she ever felt Elphaba was easier to manipulate. It would be interesting to see a AU where these two try to replace each other with Elphaba. I feel like Morrible would have the advantage of being Elphaba’s mentor, but when and if Elphaba’s true parentage came out, the Wizard could get the upper hand. Of course, Elphaba wouldn’t be down to join either of them once she found out the full truth, but I’d still love to see what the Wizard would do in that situation. Would he change for his daughter, or would he still try to persuade her? Would Morrible try to undermine their bond by supporting Elphaba? I could see it going a number of ways.
