so I had a bit of an Angsty idea..
obviously you are gonna hear it!
Cole is extremely protective. Overprotective one might say, and not in the romanticized way. He is a possessive person, wants to keep them to himself.
Jay doesn’t mind, in fact he loves it. It’s comforting to him, he likes knowing Cole cares so much and it makes him feel safe. He also likes having a second opinion on things, so Cole’s possessive and protectiveness do not bother him.
Nya is a complete different story.
Before she became samurai x, and I mean when ninjago city was just a village with a fountain, she obviously was forced to stay at the monastery with Wu. She was confined to the walls of the temple, forced to do household chores or things more lady like.
So, when she did become Samurai X, she looked for literally any excuse to get out of the monastery. I like to think it’s why you see them in the destiny’s bounty for most of the time from season 3 or 4 to season 9. She absolutely hated being at the monastery, so they all just resided in the ship.
Anyway, Coke forgets that he’s dating two people, and naturally he will have an opinion on what Nya does, where she goes, who she talks to. He does not mean it in a controlling way, it’s just how he is, and he tries to explain that to her when he can.
But to her, it feels like being trapped and controlled all over again. She wants to go out and be seen, for her, not who she’s associated with. Even now, people still just see her as their girlfriend, or Kai’s sister, or just the girl. She wants to be known for her own skill.
She’ll go outside in outfits that would make a catholic old lady clutch her pearls, and not for anyone else. She does it for herself, so she feels seen. That being said, Cole absolutely hates that she goes out in clothes like that. He doesn’t understand it.
They argue about this a lot, and no matter how many times they argue, they can never understand one another. Jay hates it.
